Kokumono ep 19

September 25th, 2006 (07:17 pm)

current mood: busy

Just a quick note that ep 19's translation is now up on the site. ^_^ Hopefully it's mostly all right now, I found *3* "your" instead of "you're" misses *in short order! -_-; I actually have Ryuuki using the royal we at the ceremony, but suspect I'll have to change that for at least part of it. There's one section where using it makes it confusing if he's talking only about himself or about him and Seien. Bleh. At least with "yo" it's clear he's only speaking for himself. >_<;

But, I think Kurou's even more scary than Reishin in some ways. ^^; The scene where Kurou describes what he did to the servants at Shouka's residence doesn't quite cover what he did. ^^;; "All they could do was, after everything had already happened, to hunt down every last servant, show them all a living hell worse than death, and then, not only kill them, but also send their families the ears and eyes they'd cut off as warning." (Yes, that's all one sentence in the original). ^^;

Anyhow, I still have half of ep 19's timing and ep 3 and 18's edits to take care of now. ^^;

Dear Japanese,

May I introduce you to my good friend, the full stop? He also has an associate known as the simple sentence.

Yes, it's true that they don't have much in common with the complex sentence. However, when you mix them up a little, you find that you have a composition filled with delightful variety and interest, without taxing the reader too very much.

Thanks for the translation!

Oh, thank you so much! It's always great to see episode translations, since I prefer to watch the raws (yet my Japanese is nowhere good enough), so I'm very happy to see full ep translations! ^__^

(I think all the Kou family members we've seen so far, apart from Shouka and his family, are scary, scary people...)

But in that scene, Kurou was refering to both himself and Reishin with 'we', right? It seemed that way in the book anyway... I feel that Reishin is the more scary of the two and very interesting. I was so touched when Reishin stated that '...I never intended to let you off since you made my adopted son show the face that I liked to see the least of all...' (in the novel) It was so sweet of him! What an interesting guy...

He is, but between Reishin and Kurou... Reishin's so lost in his own world and couldn't care less about anyone beyond himself or those few people who have managed to reach him. He's also more on the level of being a "genius". Kurou, on the other hand, is pretty much Reishin's equal in terms of intelligence, has a strong sense of responsibility but is much more "normal". Between the two of them, having Reishin casually comment about killing someone doesn't strike me as being exceptionally out of character, whereas Kurou commenting flatly about having people killed and sending the trophies to their families is more disturbing... unless Reishin thought up the idea. I suppose that's always a possibility (it's also pure speculation and not in the books at all). But, in any case, since the thievery occurred at Shouka's residence and against Shouka, Reishin killing every last one is very in character. Kurou on the other hand "hates" Shouka, so given how respectable and responsible he is, for him to go to such extremes seems much more harsh IMO.

Reishin's... an interesting character; especially with Kijin or Yuushun. Sadly, we don't get very much of a feel for Kurou's character in the novels. :/

I don't find Kurou killing people out of character. He is the type of person who does what he thinks is his duty/responsibility. And no matter what, Shouka is the eldest son of the Kou family. How can he let those people get away with disrespecting the main branch? And he does care for Shouka in his own way. He somehow felt that Shouka will be 'crashed' if he continued staying in the family... *sigh* He just wasn't as perspective as Reishin to see what Shouka was really like. If I was in his shoes, duty to the survival of the Kou family probably would have made me throw Shouka out of the family too...
Reishin is one of my favourite characters...
