Quick note Kokumono 14

July 10th, 2006 (12:11 am)
sleepy

current mood: sleepy

Umm... the translation is still in the works at this stage. There are a number of lines I don't recall coming from the novels and hearing some is proving a bit weird. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it off later... today. ^^;

Hmm... this episode's mostly in order but there's some weirdness here and there compared to the novel. Part of me wishes we could have had the scene between Kouyuu and Shuurei as it was written, but... ^^;; We got the equivalent later in the archives. The only thing is, in the novel, that scene was before Eigetsu and Shuurei started on their 2 month temporary stint, whereas in the anime it's after some time. It makes sense in that Shuurei spoke to Kou Kijin as she did but... *sigh* Some interesting differences between the novel and the anime:

- The ceremony for successful examinees has the examinees out in the central courtyard while the officials are in the hall watching. There's no chance for Shuurei to see Reishin with the other senior secretaries therefore (although she didn't seem to notice him in the anime).

- rather than fighting the urge to kick Ryuuren, Shuurei fought the urge to put poisonous mushrooms into the stew pot. ^^;; Shuurei was making pork dumplings at the time as she relates the story to Eigetsu and Seiran and the dumpling wrappings become wonderfully thin from her pounding them out. Shuuei hears the last of her fighting back the urge to poison his younger brother... ^^;;

- During dinner, Shuuei comments that Kouyuu's superior had been summoned by the Emperor and notices Kouyuu's in a bad mood and he realises that not only did Ryuuki not say anything to Kouyuu, but Reishin too didn't say anything. Annoyed, Kouyuu threatens to sew Shuuei's mouth shut and tells Shuurei to bring him some needle and thread. ^^;;

- After dinner with Kouyuu and Shuuei, Kouyuu speaks to Shuurei outside about her uniform. Apparently those in charge of the uniforms hadn't expected a female to pass and therefore the design for the clothes hadn't been created yet but Kouyuu expects it should be ready by the time she's given her official assignment. While outside, Shuurei looks at a plum sapling that's blooming and starts to tear up. Kouyuu shoves his handkerchief on her and tells her to take care of the dirt that's gotten into her eyes as much as she needs. ^^;; When asked what Kouyuu's wish was when he'd taken the exams, he says that it was to be by a certain someone's side and to help that person. Shuurei asks Kouyuu who her sponsor had been, but Kouyuu tells her that that person hadn't prepared himself yet wanted to remain a mystery for the time being.

- missing the scene between Reishin and Ryuuki. Ryuuki mentions that in unusual years that a training period is used before assigning the new trainees to their posts. Reishin acknowledges that and admits that the same happened in his year as well. During their talk, Reishin comments that once he's taken Ryuuki's measure as Emperor he fully intends to return to Kou Province and sequester himself there, but Ryuuki denies that saying that as long as Shouka and Kouyuu were in the capital, Reishin would also stay and ensure that nothing happened to them. Ryuuki asks if Reishin regrets sending Kouyuu to be assigned to Ryuuki but Reishin doesn't have the word "regret" in his vocabulary. Instead he tells Ryuuki that if Ryuuki should cause Kouyuu regret, then Reishin would have his head. Ryuuki accepts that.

- Ryuuki meets Shuurei, Eigetsu and Seiran at the gates surprising the three of them.
S: "Just why are you here?!"

E: "Shuurei-san, you're talking to the Emperor"

R: "It's all right Eigetsu. I'm happy with this."

S: "Why don't you go drown yourself in that lake there?"

R: "I'm doing all I can... Maybe I should send you a second love (straw) voodoo doll."

S: "If you do, just send straw. I can use it to make natto".

- When talking to Kijin about Shuurei being assigned to cleaning the lavatories and Eigetsu polishing shoes, Yuuri wonders why Kijin and Reishin haven't done anything to remove Rou Kanri from the courts. Yuuri then asks Kijin what he'd been assigned seeing as he'd gone through the training period in his year as well. Apparently Kijin was assigned to washing dishes in the kitchens while Reishin was assigned to helping out in the stables. ^^;;

Next episode... seems like it's going to focus on Kouyuu but... the description on NHKs site suggests that they might go about the story in a related but different fashion to the novels. (Like ep 4, 5 in story 1).

Trailer:
Whether it's cleaning the toilets or polishing shoes, I'll do whatever I have to. I'll never be beaten because of harassment. Hm? Kouyuu-sama, you seem a bit down...

NHK preview:
Training of the new officials continues. Shuurei's uncle and sponsor, Kou Reishin, is unhappy seeing Shuurei being treated so harshly. And so he petitions Saiunkoku's emperor Ryuuki to protect Shuurei. Kouyuu's attitude towards Shuurei seems unusual Reishin watches/question Kouyuu closely and Kouyuu wonders if Reishin really loves him or not.

I wonder if we'll see Seiran's side as well?? Shouka papa's really something. ^___^ I know I thought that we'd cut for the hiatus at the end of story 3 but... I wonder if 2 eps is enough to finish this storyline?? I don't think it really is, but maybe I'm wrong? >_<;

*fails*

This whole story is quite nuanced, which is easy to forget in the face of the funny.

Will have to endure the patience for the translation.

But I have to ask (and I almost asked yesterday but didn't want to be impatient): Ryuuki gave Shuurei a flower. Is it the same kind of giving a flower as Kouyuu & Shuuei? Does Shuurei know what it means?

Hiatus in the middle of the story?! *stomps foot*

Very nuanced. ^^; There are some very minor scenes that I didn't mention but looking at them now, they do hint at things.

Translation is now up. ^__^

But I have to ask (and I almost asked yesterday but didn't want to be impatient): Ryuuki gave Shuurei a flower. Is it the same kind of giving a flower as Kouyuu & Shuuei? Does Shuurei know what it means?

No worries on asking, although answering might take a bit of time sometimes. ^^;; I don't think this incident was the same as with Shuuei and Kouyuu. If you remember at that time, Shuuei and Kouyuu were taken a bit aback by being given live flowers but given that Ryuuki was in such a hurry, they could appreciate that aspect as well. BTW, the adonis' meaning is for congratulations. I suspect Shuurei knows what sending flowers means (or should in the novels). ^_^

Hiatus in the middle of the story?! *stomps foot*

I'm hoping not, but unless they cut quite a bit out of the story or really gloss over certain parts, (although they did that very well in story 2...) it's going to be hard to finish book 3 in 2 more eps.

yay! translation! (stupid 8a class - *yawn*)

I would think Shuurei would know about the flowers, too. But then there was the time that she overheard Ryuuki & Shuuei talking about it and she freaked out. (When she still thought she was "safe" from Ryuuki.) I guess that's another case of the shoujo dumb for comedy's sake. *sigh*

Make your own rules

No worries on asking

You might want to qualify that, or you'll get questions like "what are they saying?" ~_^

*laughs* I'll keep that in mind. ^^;;

A lot of ep 4 and 5 were either taken out of context or simply created for the sake of the anime. The banquet scene and the tournament were all created, and in the novels, Shuurei's presence at the residence was mostly a secret. The bartering incident with Ryuuren did happen in the novels although he'd been sent on his own to buy foodstuffs. Ryuuren however, didn't meet Shuurei and Eigetsu until they all went to the dorm prior to the Kaishi test. (The examinees were... sort of... sequestered away for one month during the exam period. I believe theirs was the cursed 13th building or something...). ^^;;

I could get bitter at all the changes the anime made. *grumble*

In the preview, Koyuu is seen blushing and saying sth to Ryuuki and Shuuei...I was wondering if it is about Shuurei? As youve read the novels, could you please tell me if Koyuu has feelings for Shuurei (though that seems very unlikely T_T)? It was nice to see Shuurei put her dream before anything else (meaning, romance :D), but it won't hurt having MORE romance here and there. Her relationship with Ryuuki has been in a halt since episode 8 or 9!
And again, I want to thank you for yr translation. If I have to wait for the fansub of Wesuck(though delightful as it is!), my patience will all drained out and leave me heart-broken :D

I can't think of any scenes in the novels that would have Kouyuu blushing like that unless it's the conversation he has with Reishin that he immediately regretted asking only being done with those two as well. However, it had nothing to do with Shuurei. The other possibility is that the anime might explore something that Shuuei has realised in the novel but was left as a single paragraph or two. This aspect is further developed over time, especially in books 7 & 8. I have to admit, I'm curious to see exactly how the next ep is carried out because there should be some really good stuff between Kouyuu and Shouka as well as possibly between Seiran and Shouka. (I'm guessing that the anime might be concocting some material for this ep considering the description on NHKs site for the ep... unless it may be the scene where the three of them are talking about a marriage proposal between one official's daughter and Kouyuu? Shuuei told Kouyuu to make sure he didn't inadvertently agree to marrying the woman, and that he'd interfere with the wedding / arrangements if anything did end up happening.) ^^;

More than anything, Kouyuu sees Shuurei initially more as a pupil than as a woman which is why he neither hates her nor treats her differently from anyone else. He does have certain issues however, including how he feels about having the last name "Li". This aspect should be addressed in the next episode however.

When Kouyuu's put in the situation of considering being romantically involved with Shuurei, it throws him into a fair amount of confusion. (Not to mention makes him extremely awkward). However, he realises that if he were to approach her that way, not only would he buy more of Reishin's anger / pranks, he'd most likely get the same from Seiran. ^^;;

awwwwwwww!!! i really love these tiny details and comparisons between the novel and anime!!! ^___________^
I hope you'll do the same with the manga!
Kouyu really has no clue how to deal with women let a lone a crying one lol
and i love how he adores Reiishin. Does the novel give any background in how kyouyu came to be adopted by him or who his parents are?
So Reiishin sponsored Shuurei? does she even know ^_^? probably not. I love how he isn't afraid to threatened the emperor lol
but he needn't worry neee ! Ryuuki wouldn't let anyone harm Shuurei ^o^

...... I think there was a hint about how he was "adopted" in the omake CD drama. Reishin virtually kidnapped him off the streets IIRC. In story 6-1, when Reishin tells Kouyuu he's being assigned to the Emperor, Kouyuu refuses and says he doesn't want to do it. Reishin then goes down a list of all the times Kouyuu said "no" in the past. It includes:

- the day previous, Reishin told Kouyuu to make him steamed sweet buns
- a short while before, Reishin told Kouyuu to attend court in his stead since it was too much of a pain to go to.
- a few years earlier, Reishin had Kouyuu "accidentally" knock the toupee off an official he hated in front of everyone
- before that, he told Kouyuu to dress as a girl and win top prize in a drag competition
- and as a child when Reishin told him he was going to adopt him, he said the same thing - "no". ^^;

Ryuuki wouldn't let anyone harm Shuurei ^o^
......Ryuuki can only do so much though. Although he does what he can too. ^_^

As of vol 10, nope. ^^;;

Hmm... ch 4, we get the background to the meaning of the Emperor giving a flower to one of his subjects. Ryuuki wakes in the middle of the night and after a moment of panic, sees Shuurei sleeping on the floor in the room. He then picks her up and carries her back to bed and goes back to sleep holding her. Shuurei wakes the next morning to discover to her shock that not only was she not sleeping on the floor, she was in much the same position as she'd been the previous morning. After yelling at Ryuuki, she promptly kicks him out of her rooms (without having eaten breakfast) telling him she's tired and Ryuuki ends up going to his lecture with Sa Taiho on his own. Ryuuki then sends a page to Shuuei and Kouyuu with live irises. We also learn the full meaning of the flower and Ryuuki's message in sending those to them.

Shuurei spends the day doing embroidery and ends up stabbing herself in the finger, but by night, she finishes her work and gives it to Ryuuki. Ryuuki's especially happy when he finds out Seiran doesn't have anything embroidered by Shuurei and asks her how embroidery is done. Shuurei pulls out her sewing box and notices one of the needles has gone rusty already as Shusui brings in a nightcap. Ryuuki pours the drink into the silver teacup that Shuurei'd received earlier from Shouka and as he looks over her shoulder at the contents of her sewing box, he accidentally spills his wine into the box. Shuurei gets very angry and has Ryuuki carefully pour out the wine and wipe the contents of the box dry. When Ryuuki comes back, he gets in trouble again when Shuurei realises that some of her needles are missing. ^^;

Later, after playing the erhu for him, Ryuuki falls asleep, and Shuurei tucks him in bed. Looking in the mirror, she wishes a bit that she were more beautiful and more worthy of being in the residence, but realises that that's not who she is and that eventually she'll be going back to her life with her father and Seiran. She then decides instead of sleeping in the same room as Ryuuki to take a blanket and sleep in the next room.

Later that night, Ryuuki wakes screaming and Shuurei runs over to find out what's wrong. When she tries shaking him, Ryuuki grabs her and hangs on to her tight but doesn't seem to really be aware of her. Shusui then comes running in to find out what happened, and Shuurei asks her to get rid of everyone else who'd come running and that she'd try to get Ryuuki to calm down. She then struggles to grab her erhu with Ryuuki clinging on to her and after playing for a while, Ryuuki final regains his composure and lets go of her. He then tells her about his fear of the dark and why and tells her about Prince Seien. Shuurei ends up crying for Ryuuki's sake and he asks her to play the erhu for him.

Early the next morning, Shuurei goes to the archives and talks to her father about Ryuuki and he tells her about when he'd first met Ryuuki. At night, Ryuuki's wandering about outside Shuurei's rooms only to get caught by her and scolded for wandering about in light clothing again. Ryuuki gives her the hair ornament in return for her embroidered gift from the previous night and Shuurei tells him to come in and that she'll play the erhu for him.

In this way, from that night on, Saiunkoku's Emperor Ryuuki

was no longer all alone.

Is this scene in the novel? coz in the anime it was Seiran who came to Ryuuki..

It's in the novels too. The anime skipped this scene. Seiran waking Ryuuki becomes the first night Ryuuki sleeps in Shuurei's bed. The second night, he wakes up and sees Shuurei sleeping on the floor and carries her back to bed in the middle of the night. The third night, Shuurei sleeps in the next room causing Ryuuki to panic when he wakes in the middle of the night all alone.

aaaaah! Ryuuki is the Emperor! he could have their heads if he wanted neee? :)

I thought much the same thing last week when I saw the preview. But this week, I figured out that all the guys are letting her win everyone over with her "effort", just like Shouka said. (At least that's what I figure without having read the translation. Stupid 8a class. >.<)

I do like the image of Ryuuki yelling at the people giving her a hard time, though. ^_^
