^^^^^ As above. Finally got around to choosing a new kanji dictionary so hopefully it'll be okay. It's from middle/HS upwards, and is organized around radicals which is what I was looking for. If not... I'll pick one up next time I go to a J bookstore I guess. >_<; But with that, I've managed to pre-order Saiunkoku vol 1 manga. I almost bought 2 copies (one to chop up if necessary for scanning purposes) but decided against it for now. Oddly enough, between killing the spine for scanning and slicing of the binding, I'll slice a book apart. Strange.

I finally decided to go with a paid account today. *surprised* I'd been debating it for a while, but finally decided to go with it after wanting to get / have more icons. ^^;; Sad but true. What's really sad is that, unless LJ's been changing things around a bit, the change in how things are shown (ex replying etc.) is throwing me a touch. ^^; It'll take a bit of getting used to. -_-;

Otherwise, hopefully I'll be able to get back to what I'm hoping to send to Ysa and finish getting more things ready for editing tomorrow. I can hope to be productive.

One thing that I noticed with this episode, when reading the side story, is that some of the character names may be wrong. Either that, or they're a bit screwy in the anime. (This may be closer to reality since I started changing it, but changed it back again when something made me stop.) I suspect Ryuushin is actually Ryuu Shin, and Sougen is Sou Gen. This would then tie in with how Kijin always called Shuurei "Kou Shuu". I could be wrong though. I'll have to check again later.

*nods* Today, I will finish catching up! (I still say we need a cute short version of "Saiunkoku Monogatari". My fingers are wearing out typing all that! ^_^)

^___^ I agree a short form for "Saiunkoku Monogatari" is needed. >_<;; From what I've gathered hunting through the J fansites, there's no consistent short form for it, but the two most common are either "Saiun" or "Saiunkoku". I've seen SaiMono in English in one or two places, but that's about it. So "Kokumono" would work. ^_^ Anything's got to be shorter than the full title, and "SM" to me, still means Sailor Moon. :P

Curious (without trying to sound like a squealing fangirl saying "gimme now, damnit!"): will you be translating the manga? The scanlation team that's doing it now is less than awesome. And I'm used to your translations (*squee*), so if I knew you'd be doing them, I'd be more likely to collect the manga…

I will be. I'm not sure if I'll go the scanlation route or not yet, but I will definitely be translating them. ^_^

*shrug* By now, I'm accustomed to flipping between the images & the translation, so that's cool. Curses, though! Now that's another series I'm going to be picking up. *stuff!*

Hee hee - Kokumono! ^_^ (You're right about SM being Sailor Moon. Yes, I'm being lazy & combining comments. *hangs head*)

Well, if the basis of the names are Chinese, it would be two words rather than one. There are actually a few Japanifications throughout the series, minor things, that have bugged me a bit for historical purposes, but I am nitpicking. :)

One of those was regarding names though. Especially in ancient China and up to the last 50 years or so, Chinese personal names depended on generation. This was particularly true for male names, and was a huge issue in the Imperial family, because it defined how heirs were determined. It also has the purpose of making it easy for people to know what rank a relative has (and therefore what level of respect to afford them).

For example, a family decides that all sons born in this generation will have personal names (Chinese names are two characters long) beginning with the character "Kuang", eg. Kuang Hsu. The sons of the Kuang generation will have personal names starting with the character "Pu", eg. Pu Yi. In the Imperial family, once a boy of one generation becomes Emperor, the next Emperor must usually be from the generation after the previous Emperor. Thus, in this example, Emperor Kuang Hsu was succeeded by Emperor Pu Yi.

The tradition of retaining the same first character in personal names was so strong, Chinese immigrants would write back to their clan's headquarters (usually an ancestral hall) in China to find out what the current generation's character was.

So Seien and Ryuuki, being of the same generation, cannot have different first characters for their names. Shuuei and Ryuuren, being of the same generation, cannot have different first characters for their name. Also, due to the generational rule, the Ran family shouldn't have one son who is always named Ryuuren in each generation. :)

That said, I do like the characters chosen for everyone's names, even if the historicalness of it makes me twitch. I know it's supposed to be a fantasy! ;) Have you seen this page, btw? It's the character's names as they would be pronounced in Mandarin.

PS: Thanks for friending back!

Thanks for the info and the link! Hmm... so this convention is based more on generation and something like being half-sibs (for ex.) wouldn't matter? From what I understand about Ryuuren's name, it's given only to those individuals deemed worthy of having it, and is almost more like a title. IIRC, he took that name around when he turned four, and his given name was different (I don't know if anyone actually knows his original name). It apparently takes two characters from "sou-ryuu-ren-sen" which seems to be from the family... crest? Otherwise, apparently, you can count how many people have had that name in the entire Ran family history.

Yup, it's based more on generation than parentage. Half-siblings wouldn't change anything. :)

Ryuuren as a title rather than a birth name makes much more sense! I'd always wondered how they determined a kid was smart enough to get the name if it was given at birth otherwise. :)

Not sure. I decided against picking up a second copy since the book purchase was running relatively high. If I do pick up a second copy, then yes I'll release the scans / do a scanlation. ^_^

Gah! I need more harddrive space... >_<;

About Saiunkoku Monogatari's Translation

Uhm, sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but here it goes: I've been following your Saiunkoku Monogatari chapter translations, and since I can't do it from the original because my Japanese skills are 0, and Chinese almost the same, I'd like to retranslate them into Spanish.
Don't worry, this isn't for a fansub project (I haven't heard from any Spanish groups being interested in this), I only want to spread Saiunkoku fandom to those who don't understand English. So, if you don't mind, I would like to post the retranslations in my journal http://unscapable-fate.livejournal.com/ .
And of course I'll give you proper credit, links and stuff. Just tell me what you think about it. This is my mail inzilbeth_[at]hotmail[dot]com Thank you for reading this!
