Twelve Days Day 3

And the next day has been released. I think I'll switch to something other than FB next. :P Otherwise, while writing up the update, it suddenly occurred to me that instead of the 12days of Xmas, it should've been the 13shi or if you include the onigiri and God, the 15 fruits in the basket. :P


I still seem to be fading in the early evening although yesterday's headache is finally gone. Yay!

Today, I finally got around to crushing the candy canes, and have gotten about 2/3 of the way through the estimated weight needed. Not sure, it looks like I'm getting a lot of crush, more than I think was expected. Papertowels did indeed work reasonably well at 3-4 towels thick. The female sibling unit did pick up some paper lunchbags though which will make doing the rest much easier. I was working with an awkward system of crushing on the cutting board, transferring to wax paper, then pouring into a bowl. I suppose I could have tried pouring directly into a dish, but the one I'm using to hold the candy would've been too small to manage that cleanly. No, paper bag will definitely make things much simpler. Crushing candies is certainly giving me a good workout though as it's pretty tiring after a while. :P

Otherwise, I made a pumpkin apple loaf recipe of some sort (can't recall the exact name). I was thinking it'd be good for breakfast (I like having some sort of loaf or bread for brekky), but this one... The recipe really took me aback when I *read* it as I was making it. *3* cups of sugar?!?! I'm not sure this thing will be very well suited for breakfast... @_@ I'll find out how it turned out tomorrow when I actually cut into it though. :P

It was a close call between doing some eggnog cookies for freezing and Flamika's Pan de Polvo recipe with Flamika's recipe winning out. Given how much lard is in the recipe, I didn't expect it would stick to anything, so I don't think it's a fair test of how the Silpats work, but certainly nothing stuck. :P Those things'll take a touch of getting used to. Not to mention they're a bit wider but also shorter than the cookie sheets. >_< Eggnog cookies will probably be done tomorrow for freezing as I've left the butter out. (Too much of a pain to put it back in only to take them out again in several hours and wait for it to soften again. I assume they can survive being out one night). :P

I've also been debating making another batch of Ichi-san's Vanilla Crescents, but the idea of playing human mixmaster again, and the resulting dulling of my knife is holding me back. ^^; The female sibling unit did say something about maybe picking up a second spice mill which would make it a possibility though. Shall see. And if that happens... I'll end up with lots of egg whites again. >_< I wonder how well the chouquettes recipe would take to being altered for whites only? It'd certainly cut down on the cholesterol, but I'm not sure how it would affect flavour. I remember as a child we used to do four yolks in the custard and four eggwhites in the choux for cream puffs so the pastry itself will puff up. The question is flavour and if the yolks is important in that sense. :-?

Hmm... I should probably hold off on the vanilla crescents until later in the new year. The almonds will hold until then, and I really should make some regular sugar cookies first since we have the shortening for it. You know... from that original list I'd made, this is what's been done so far:

Vanilla Crescents (Ichi-san; quieter cookie but yummy; especially good for afternoon tea)
Pan de Polvo (Flamika; dangerous but watch sugar)
Eggnog cookies (Ysa-chan; cookie monster! YUM! *_*)
Almond wafers (Favorite Cookie Recipes; yummy but watch the spread and bake time)
Orange Pumpkin Loaf (; fiddled with the recipe and ended up being very orangey but good.)
Cream Puffs (orig.; chomp!)
White Chocolate and Peppermint Creams (Bon Appetit Dec 1993; prep work being done)
Pumpkin Apple Loaf (Holiday Baking?; untasted)

I really have to watch the female sibling unit sometimes or watch what I say. When doing the original baking shopping, I'd paused in the baking section and pondered picking up some candied ginger only to veto it since I didn't really plan on making anything with it and had only seen it mentioned in some recipes I'd been reading. The next time she went out shopping, she picked up a couple packs of candied ginger. >_< Some other items she's bought to "challenge" me with this Christmas include candied citrus (I *don't* make fruit cake and no one here likes it), peppermint syrup from Starbucks (eh?), and some pecan halves. 0_0; That's okay, when asking her to buy "as small a pack of raisins as you can get" to be used for baking, she bought a six pack of lunchbox raisins. -_-; I think she does it largely to bug me. ^^;

You know, the only thing not done of the "want to do" list is a pie of some sort but I still have lots of ingredients that were picked up that I want to use so I get the feeling the baking insanity isn't over yet. >_<

But... since Xmas is getting closer, I think I want to also shift focus to some more savoury items. I need to think of what to make for Xmas dinner too. :P

Anyhow, time for me to totter off to bed. Not to mention get out of floury clothes. ^^;; I seem to be doing a good impression of the abominable snowman a lot these days. :P
