And so, summer's here...
(Oddly enough, the narration starts off with something that's sort of reminiscent of Full Metal Alchemist...)
[In order to gain
Or to learn something,
It may be that
Something must be sacrificed or hurt
That's rather depressing]
We start the chapter at Kaibara HS and Yuki tells Tohru that he won't be home for dinner as he'll be eating elsewhere. Apparently, Kakeru invited Yuki for dinner. Tohru smiles and wishes him a good time.
And Yuki recalls what Manabe had told him:
The cause of that girl's mother's accident was
That the car Komaki's father was in
Ran into her
Her father was killed instantly...
Kakeru apparently waiting for Yuki to get out of school calls him over and Yuki apologises as he'd had to take care of something first. Yuki comments that he'd had some things to take care of since Kakeru had invited him so suddenly, but Kakeru tells Yuki that it couldn't be helped. Afterall, Komaki didn't work that day so he'd be able to introduce her to Yuki, and his mother would be late coming home from work too, and meat's on sale that day too.
Kakeru goes on to exclaim how their Komaki is unparalleled in her love of meat and that she's a "Meat Angel" (niku tenshi). Yuki tells Kakeru not to give weird impressions of someone before he meets them. Yuki then asks if Komaki's aware that he has ties with Tohru and Kakeru tells him that she knows and that he's told her they were friends.
Kakeru asks Yuki how Tohru's been since then and Yuki tells him she's been the same as always and smiles including that day. Yuki, realising that Kakeru might take that the wrong way then quickly tells him that it doesn't mean that Tohru wasn't worried about it or anything like that... and Kakeru tells him that he didn't say anything.
Kakeru: ...I understand
Seeming happy or not or
Laughing foolishly without reason; it's not like she'd been doing that
...until a short while ago
I didn't understand that.
...Because I'd never really thought about it.
Kakeru flashes back on the day he'd told Tohru not to presume that all the world's unhappiness was on her, or that she was the more unfortunate. Komaki hadn't heard him say that to Tohru at the time, but later on, Kakeru told Komaki he'd said that to Tohru.
Kakeru goes on to tell Komaki how he can't stand how Tohru acts so unhappy when Komaki had also lost her father and is also going through hard times. He goes on to say how it seems like Tohru's acting like she's more unfortunate than Komaki and acting like Komaki's difficulties are less than hers...
But Komaki starts crying from what Kakeru says and tells him that it doesn't make her happy. She understands that he'd said it for her sake, but putting peoples' unhappiness on a scale and deciding which of the two are more unhappy and winning in that manner, doesn't make her happy.
Until then, Kakeru had always assumed that the person he'd come to like so much felt the same way he did when seeing the same thing. And so, his not understanding Komaki being hurt by that incident and cry was a total shock.
Komaki greets Yuki and Kakeru as they come to the apartment. Apparently, she couldn't wait to meet Yuki and introduces herself as Nakao Komaki (Komaki Nakao by Western standards).
Yuki: Nice to meet you. I'm Sohma...
Kakeru: See? Isn't he clueless?
Yuki goes on to tell her how Kakeru had told him she really likes meat and called her a "meat angel"
Kakeru flees but Komaki runs after him and hits him. Komaki's a bit put off by Kakeru always giving people strange names and tells Yuki not to worry about it.
She then asks Yuki if Kakeru being like that every day isn't a bother but Yuki says it's all right; he's pretty much gotten used to it. Komaki then goes on to tell Yuki that everything's all right. She's heard a little bit from Kakeru about his situation.
Komaki: If there's anything I can do, please tell me!
Afterall, We're both girls so I want to help!!
But you're really something.
I really can see you as a guy so it's all right
...Because of family matters
Dressing as a guy
Kakeru: It's a lie
Komaki apologises profusely to Yuki about her misunderstanding while Kakeru comments how she's really cute believing anything...
Kakeru then goes off to change but before leaving makes it very clear that they're not to peep.
After Kakeru leaves, Yuki asks Komaki if Kakeru's like that at home too, and she admits that's the case, but that in Junior HS, he hardly ever spoke. Yuki's really surprised and Komaki explains how he always looked really angry and was hard to approach. Apparently he changed after things got cleared up with his family matters and everyone was really shocked by the change. And they'd started going out around that time.
She goes on to explain how she was really happy when they started going out and how Kakeru's really nice and always tries to understand her. And while they do fight on occasion that that also has meaning.
Kakeru interrupts the two calling them an "idiot couple" (ba kappuru ba(ka) couple). Komaki decides to get started with dinner and Yuki offers to help while Kakeru asks what's for dinner. Komaki answers Yaki... ...niku
And yells at them whether some strange word may have come to their minds just then. Both Yuki and Kakeru deny it but... ^^;;
Kakeru flashes back to the scene between him and Tohru from the previous chapter. Tohru apologises to Kakeru for not being able to remember who he was and Kakeru tells her not to worry about it.
Kakeru: To be frank, there were times when it annoyed me but that was
Simply my presumption.
No doubt, just standing took all you had at that time
Saying that sort of thing...
Kakeru goes on to tell Tohru that he'd gotten into trouble for it from Komaki as well, and that he'd said that without thinking and not understanding, but that now, he's come to understand a little and has come to understand little by little.
Kakeru then rather self-consciously then goes on to tell Tohru that Komaki is well and that Tohru's also seems happy and that's he's glad.
Tohru tells Kakeru that it seems that recently Yuki seems to really be enjoying himself and smiles/laughs a lot and says that it's since he'd met Kakeru.
[For some reason
It really made me want to cry
I knew that smile
Other than oneself
That someone other than oneself
Would not become sad]
After dinner, Yuki thanks Komaki and Kakeru for dinner and Kakeru asks him if he'll be okay going home alone. Yuki tells him it's all right as he remembers how to get back but Kakeru says that's not what he meant.
Kakeru: Afterall, you're a girl. It's dangerous!
Yuki: I see. Thank you!
And Yuki says goodnight to Komaki...
Komaki comments to Kakeru how the evening was so much fun and how beautiful Yuki is. And Kakeru comments instead how he's so strong.
Kakeru: ...He's been supported by Honda-san and is
a good guy
Komaki comments she's really glad to have been able to meet him and wonders if she'll be able to see him again. Kakeru tells her that no doubt she will and comments how Machi being Machi... if they (Machi and Yuki) were to get together then they'd be related... However, there's not much progress since they're both so clueless. ^^;
And at the end of the chapter, Kakeru's mother hears that a beautiful boy had been over from Komaki. She then yells at Kakeru about bringing home a bishounen when she's at work late and that no doubt he'd done it deliberately. Kakeru yells back that he had done it deliberately and he'd done it because she's like that he didn't want to, it'd be too embarrassing. Komaki can only watch the two and tell them that they'll get in trouble from the landlord again...
To be continued in HtY Issue 18 Aug 20
Hopefully things'll get back to the main story line next chapter. -_-
