HakuYou Game Play Comments

February 27th, 2010 (05:21 pm)

current mood: amused

I'm sorry Reid! I don't know how many times Raven ended up killing you. A dozen? More?? >.<;; I'll say this much for the game. This is the only game I've ever played (not that I've played many like this, mind you) where having the two main characters fall in love and go off into the sunset together is deemed a 'bad end'. ^^; So far, I've managed to have Lydia leave Edgar and return to Scotland numerous times, Edgar and Lydia both killed thrice, and the two married off twice. Whoops. ^^;

The game itself is based on the anime series, but Ermine doesn't show up. The only character to really hit on Lydia is Edgar. The others remain in character as per the anime, so none of them try hitting on her. ^^; Sadly, we don't get to see Kelpie chasing after her either. (Or at least not so far as I've played yet.) More than anything, it really plays like a series of short stories a la Choose Your Own Adventure style. (There aren't *that* many choices per story, but enough that figuring out where you went wrong is sometimes a bit tricky. ^^;; )

I don't think I'm going to say much about the stories yet since it would take a lot of time and space, but personally, I'm really glad to have gotten hold of the game and to play it. I still have... 3? more? stories that I haven't played at all, so I'll be going at it again probably tonight. ^^; Generally speaking, the game starts off the day after the final scene in the first story when Lydia reads the newspaper article the Blue Knight Earl's return and gets the letter from Edgar. It goes into a fairly long recap of the first story that must be gone through once. It then automatically goes into the first case with the letter from young Morris. After that case is solved, the player then gets to choose one of three letters to tackle next. Once that one`s solved, there`s an interlude sequence where we get a recap of Edgar`s and Lydia`s "engagement". After the proposal story recap, we then have two more rounds of choosing which case to tackle and then automatically go into the final story-telling where Edgar faces Ulysses. The final story does vary a bit according to which story was done immediately prior.

In terms of game play, I'll admit, I've had to look up hints a few times now. -_-; I mentioned getting Reid killed over a dozen times... I'm still not sure how come things didn't work out when I went through that game. Perhaps because Edgar's and Lydia's relationship was still blue. That's another tricky aspect of the game; balancing their relationship. Too lovey dovey (amber or pink) and Lydia's more focussed on Edgar. Too standoffish (light blue or navy) and they end up parting ways. One storyline, I quickly got their relationship in the green only to be faced with some difficult choices late in the game that sent their relationship into the pink and no way to bring it back down again. >.<;; Sometimes, one choice can even send the relationship up not just one notch (if any) but two! Ack! So, yes, it's been a bit of a balancing act. ......Which reminds me. I did have Lydia lie in one story about two fairies Raspberry and Cranberry, and told him they were guys. Lydia, Edgar and the others later ended up going to Faerie where Edgar and Raven both see the two fairies and Edgar realises that Lydia lied to him. Whoops. ^^;; I'll also admit that Lydia (and me by default) ended up getting taken by Edgar hook, line, and sinker. I was right there along with her when I realised we'd been tricked going "Aa..." ^^;;

All-in-all, I have to admit that I'm really enjoying this game. I've played through it 3? 4? times now and still have a few more letters that I haven't played at all. Hopefully, I'll be able to have done all the scenarios once by weekend's end. It'll take a fair amount longer though to finish gathering all the album images, especially since I'll need to replay some of the cases in order to find them. ^^;

Will post more about the actual stories later. :)

That makes no sense to me. Is it because when they go off into the sunset, no one else gets helped?

Sort of. Basically, the case that was getting worked on either isn't satisfactorily solved or gets left by the wayside, so in that sense, it`s not a `good` end. Still, it`s a bit odd for it to be considered a `bad` one. :P

Only the Japanese would think that a lovey-dovey ending isn't as good as a solving the problem ending.

It is great fun, but I think it`s definitely only for those who are HakuYou fans. It really does play like a series of SSs based around Lydia`s work or the fae, so I think it would be hard for non-fans to follow/get into. I will admit, there are weaknesses to the game (limited graphics), but... :P I'm really glad I got hold of it and don't regret buying it in the least. ^o^

Hakuei Ashita

Thanks for sharing. I'll have to try a game like this one of these days. I'm quite curious ^^
By the way, thanks to you I'm a huge Ghost hunt lover (^_^)y I read the manga Shintei tantei yakumo few months ago and loved it. Just found out last week that it is actually a novel (8 vol + 1 special at the moment). Anyway, I babbler it's got a very Ghost huntish feel to it and sounds very promising. Don't know if you know about it but I just wanted to share it with you as I discovered some good novels thanks to you. Hopefully you'll like it. There's a lj community if you're interested too...
