RIP Mokkun

October 5th, 2009 (03:41 pm)

current mood: depressed

I think I'll go crawl under a rock now. >.<;; Obviously no scanlation work will be getting done until I can get a new laptop and recover all my stuff from Mokkun's HD. I can only hope nothing happens to Haku in the meantime. No idea what I'm going to do about a new system. *sigh*

*pets* RIP Mokkun-san.

I just got a new laptop myself.

You got yourself a Dell, didn't you? I remember seeing something about it having a 500GB HD and being purple but not much else. How are you liking it? (Not sure who I want to go with this time, not to mention so many of the keyboards over here are the bilingual ones which I really don't like. >.> )

Inspiron 17. It's got an internal 500GD HD and an external 500GD HD. So far, I'm happy with it. I love having a laptop that has more than thirty minutes of battery time without its adapter cable. Not too tickled with Vista, but it's actually not misbehaving. Perhaps because this is a 64-bit machine.

Mine's a pure English keyboard and has a number pad. It's name is Mizuki.

Mizuki's (he's?) a 17" system? I thought you got a 15". ^^; I think I'll be going back to ~15" again, so I'll be in for some serious adjustment. Mokkun's not a Macbook Air, but he was pretty sleek and light.

I'm still debating whether to wait a bit or to just buy something and live with Vista. (Not sure if I want to upgrade to Windows 7, or if I want to hunt for a Windows XP Pro downgrade). Unfortunately, I was in a state of minor shock yesterday and wasn't in the mood to do much system hunting. Not sure why... ^^;

The pure English keyboard is somewhat important to me, because I find I mistype a lot on male parental's system. Standard keyboards have become too firmly entrenched in the brain for me to switch easily to bilingual. :P

-_-;; Unfortunately, Dell US and Dell Canada are separate entities, so I don't think that would work. Otherwise, I would've loved to try. ^^;

Doesn't hurt to find out. I'll give you the email of the rep who helped me. Ask and see.

I'm defying gender. Mizuki's a she, for now. She might experience a gender change. Yep, she's a 17". I do know that dell's offering free upgrades to Windows 7 once it comes out. She's not to heavy, Mizuki. I just need to find a sleeve that will fit her so I can drag her to school.

I think a bi-lingual keyboard would drive me batty. But I'd match my earrings, at any rate.

Actually, normally I consider Mizuki to be more a female name, but was under the impression you were naming it for a male Mizuki...? I think all systems sold after a certain point are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade, but... *sigh* Having gone through XP and Vista shortly after launch and all the incompatibilities that resulted, I have to admit, I'm just not sure which way I want to go. Vista is a royal pain and then some, but I get the feeling Windows 7 might be equally bad if not worse initially. >.>

I'm of the opinion that XP was the best OS that Windows came up with and frankly, I don't know why Vista was even needed in the first place.

Oh no! Not Mokkun. T_T
RIP Mokkun. I remember all the troubles your owner went through to get you adjusted to her specifications. I know she'll miss you.

>.<;; I *liked* Mokkun. He was a cute system and except for some Vista issues was really good about things. *sigh*

Lucky Star: Kagami WTF

Meep, sorry to hear about that :(

How dead is the wee beastie? Is it more a case of the OS installation has fallen over horribly, or more serious hardware issues?

Unfortunately, very. This is the third time I've witnessed death by fried graphics. The sudden death of a laptop in that manner is really a nasty shock, but it's starting to become old news now. Please let my next laptop last three years. *sigh*

I'm thinking I should be able to once I hit the comp store and get a 2.5" drive encasement. They're pretty cheap these days. The real headache will be finding a replacement for Mokkun. >.<;

That's horrible. :/ I hope you can get your data back! *fingers crossed*

I'm thinking it should be safe, since it was the last (two) times this happened. It's funny, I did a back up to the external fairly recently, but I think it was before I started to do stuffs again. >.< Still, it was a bit of a horrible shock at first. ^^;

I take it that Mokkun is your laptop? My friend and I have actually nicknamed her laptop Lazurus since it's been brought back from the dead 8 or 10 times since she got in August. I hope you can recover everything quickly!

Posted at: October 5th, 2009 11:37 pm (UTC)

Yup. Former laptop, now dead weight. *sigh*

Yikes! What on earth did your friend get and how dead was 'dead'?! If we're talking serious death, I think I want to stay away from that system! O_O;;

She has a little dell netbook and it just keeps dying on her. The first time she was on a conference call with her dad and tech support for like, three hours, nothing happened, and then manages to revive it the next day (and, minus the tech support call, this is what has happened each time). We also joke that it's on "life support" since she never unpluggs it, probably proof of why netbooks aren't the next big thing yet.

Hmm... hard to say if the issue plaguing her is serious or not, but it probably doesn't qualify for 'death' in my books. Death to me is more like frying graphics cards or dying power connections. (Things that a user has little to no hope of fixing on their own.) Depending on the age of a system, things like a dying HD or optical drive can be more inconveniences than grounds for system replacement.

I haven't looked much at the 10" Dell netbooks, but the 9" is definitely a thumbs down in my books. I can't believe what they did to the keyboard layout for that thing! O_O;; It would be quite horrible for any writer IMO. It's been almost two years now since netbooks started coming out, so the initial bugs are mostly hammered out, and lots of improvements have been made now. As much as I love my little Haku, there are definite limitations to him (battery life, screen size...). But hey, he's a first generation system. :P

Well I say "died" I mean that she can't get the computer to turn on at all. Like, blue screen and everything. And then it works, I think she's getting a new laptop but it was funny how she was going "awww, look how cute my computer is!" before it started dying on her. XD

Ah, okay. Blue screens can be pretty shocking sometimes. Still, if it's that new, it should be under warranty... assuming it'll actually shows its issues when tested for things. ^^;

Oh wow...it feels like the post you made when you got Mokkun was only a short while ago too. o_O

-_-;; Ordered and received just over 26 months ago. *cry* I go through laptops quite quickly (usually replaced every 3 years), but even for me, that's very fast. >.<;;

oh...ouch...My first laptop lasted me about 5-6 years before I finally fried the HD completely. I was able to recover a tiny bit of data, but there wasn't a lot of important things, so I didn't try very hard...

But good luck getting your data recovered! I know how crappy it is to lose data.

Oh, that's dreadful. I hope things work out for you. I would hate to be computer-less.

Posted at: October 8th, 2009 11:08 pm (UTC)

^^; The good thing is that I'm not completely computer-less, since I have my little netbook. The bad thing is that without my primary system, I can only do the most basic of things. >.<; Hopefully, I'll be able to find something soon. ^_^

Ooh! Pumpkins! Which reminds me, it's Thanksgiving on Monday. ^_^
