Silly idea?

June 2nd, 2009 (01:15 am)

Given all the cookie baking and butter usage happening over here lately, I'm considering making my own butter. I have no idea if this is even remotely wise. The only plus to this plan that I can think of is gaining the by-product buttermilk which can be used for making scones. ...I suspect this might be a very silly idea......

Hmm... generally speaking, I think that would especially be true for organic cream and butter. As it is, from what I saw at the grocery store today, 1L of cream costs about the same as 1 lb of butter (by same company as the cream), and our regular butter (not organic) is ~$2 more per lb than the milk company's butter. *blink* (...maybe I should be buying from the Farmers' Market at that price...)

In any case, I was already planning on making fudge again, so I needed some heavy cream. I figure I can use at least 2c of cream to make butter and seeing how it turns out. Not sure what I'm going to do with the remaining cream yet. ^^;

Mind you, these days, a lot of baking and most crafts aren't really about saving money. (Heaven knows my sock yarns are far more expensive than commercial socks!) With baking, I can buy a pie at the grocery store for $4-5, but I doubt I could make a double-crust pie that cheaply. ......It's a bit sad really. >.>
