reynardine mentioned that CPM has filed for Chapter 7. >.> It's always such a shame when the old companies fold like this. They had some really good titles, and heaven knows how many of those titles we bought when we were first getting into anime. (This is especially true prior to the opening up of online shopping and importing directly from Japan.) ^^;

Still, it's this sort of thing that makes me question my role in fandom. There's always the question of how much harm fan* (subbers, scanlators) do to the industry. It might've been less before than it is now with things having gone digital and with high-speed 'net access the norm. I do think certain aspects of what fan* do serves a purpose, but at the same time, there was once a definite credo to the fan* community as well. I'm not really sure how much that still holds these days. Mind you, I do (have done) fan-translations (amongst other things) for various titles, so it's not like I can fling stones or anything.

Having watched the industry over the years (since the 90's or so), I have to admit that in some ways it has changed a lot, and yet, in others, it hasn't changed nearly enough. :/ Still, it's never a good thing to see. :/

How ironic that the music I'd hunted down over the past number of days are the soundtracks for Arslan Senki (Heroic Legend of Arslan) and Utena. I have to decide if I want to re-rip Utena since they were apparently back-ported from FSU's iPod after her last desktop died the big crash.

Looks like my archive calendar's back to normal. ^_^ And I thought I saw someone say something about cuts working properly with X-posting, so here's to hoping...

[ETA: It works! ^o^]

It sounds like you're a not-so-happy kitty right now. >.< If you have the time and inclination later, I'd love to hear your thoughts. ^_^

*leaves tea and cappuccino cookies, molasses cookies, choco chip cookies, and... not sure if you'd want the sort of muffinish, sort of cakish, too soft to be a biscuit choco chip "something" that I created the other day* ^^;

I am indeed a kitty in need of improvement. *sigh* Snacks! I'll take all snacks you're sending.

Sort of stream-of-consciousness-y:
I think the fan* projects helped the industry and hurt it at the same time. The licenser's I think didn't properly consider the difference between what people would watch/read for free and what they would pay for. (How much they would pay is another discussion.)

Interestingly, manga is one of the few formats I support in paper production. I'm strongly in favour of distributing the other media electronically (yes, including books) to save on transportation and production fees, and then disposal issues. (That said, there are other considerations involved: server equipment is not guilt-free, as a friend recently pointed out.)

The internet and digital distribution is changing everything. The model is decentralising, and the corporations are adjusting.

On the other hand, I think the fan* projects have a darker side. I can see how someone would use that as justification for not buying the release. As in so many other areas, some people will be honest, and some people will be unscrupulous wherever the opportunity is there.
