reynardine mentioned that CPM has filed for Chapter 7. >.> It's always such a shame when the old companies fold like this. They had some really good titles, and heaven knows how many of those titles we bought when we were first getting into anime. (This is especially true prior to the opening up of online shopping and importing directly from Japan.) ^^;

Still, it's this sort of thing that makes me question my role in fandom. There's always the question of how much harm fan* (subbers, scanlators) do to the industry. It might've been less before than it is now with things having gone digital and with high-speed 'net access the norm. I do think certain aspects of what fan* do serves a purpose, but at the same time, there was once a definite credo to the fan* community as well. I'm not really sure how much that still holds these days. Mind you, I do (have done) fan-translations (amongst other things) for various titles, so it's not like I can fling stones or anything.

Having watched the industry over the years (since the 90's or so), I have to admit that in some ways it has changed a lot, and yet, in others, it hasn't changed nearly enough. :/ Still, it's never a good thing to see. :/

How ironic that the music I'd hunted down over the past number of days are the soundtracks for Arslan Senki (Heroic Legend of Arslan) and Utena. I have to decide if I want to re-rip Utena since they were apparently back-ported from FSU's iPod after her last desktop died the big crash.

Looks like my archive calendar's back to normal. ^_^ And I thought I saw someone say something about cuts working properly with X-posting, so here's to hoping...

[ETA: It works! ^o^]

When did you write it and what was it about exactly? (Did you mention it on your journal?) I feel like I've read a passing mention like that on my f-list, but after a few days the 'when' of things becomes extremely hazy in my mind. I will admit, I do think the reason the industry is in its current state is multi-faceted. :/

I'm hoping to defend in the summer but I did most of my research in 2005-2007. I think the reasons are multi-faceted as well, but I think that there are differences between fans who started after digital media and before.

Ah, okay. Good luck with your defense! Hopefully, your examining committee won't do to you what mine did to me. They kept me waiting for 20-30 mins for the verdict even though they decided much sooner. (They were chatting about other things in there! >.<;; ) Will you be saying anything about what you wrote up after you defend?

I'm an anthropologist. I did participant observation in an anime club. My thesis title is "Fan Boundaries and Economic Morality." I look at how the fan group policed their boundaries around bootlegging and differences between the older, male regular participants, the younger female fans who participated briefly and the participants I surveyed at an anime convention. If you have more questions, I could answer them.
