current mood: conflicted

Dilemmas, dilemmas... I have a choice. Take a chance and buy 11 volumes of a book series used off auction, or buy the books 2-3 at a time and hope I don't get utterly caught up in the series and wish that I bought the first 11 vols all at once. (There are ~15 books in the series at the moment.) Of course, the flip-side to this is that I could end up with 11 books I have no interest in reading. Price difference is probably $20ish. Time difference could be up to a year or more. >.<;;

Devil's Advocate

I'm always the cautious type. So let's say that you do get all eleven volumes off auction and then find out that you hate the series.

What then?

On the other hand, if you only buy one and find that you don't like the series, isn't that less money that you've spent?

And if you do like the series, see if you can't buy the other ten volumes via auction. If you can't, you have two volume one's and you might as well put one up for sale via amazon, or something.

Just food for thought. ^o^

Re: Devil's Advocate

*laughs* I'm seriously conflicted on this. Part of me wants to while part of me says it's better to be cautious. >.> One volume is ~$11-12, so 2-3 books is the balance point.

Auction's a tricky thing. It's hard to say when it'll come up on there. The other thing though, is that buying on auction leads to the temptation of buying other things (like doujinshi...). That's another lesson in self-discipline... >.<;

FWIW, the books are J light novels, so selling extra volumes, while possible, isn't the easiest thing to do. >.>

Out to tea

*amused* Well, as they say in Hebrew, Bets'lcha, best of luck.

(You could probably sell the extra book somewhere here on LJ.)

On the other hand, I wish I had more advice to offer. Not very good at this, am I?

Re: Devil's Advocate

*laughs* Well, it is published in Cobalt, so... ^^; Still, from the reviews on Amazon for volume one (there're only four reviews), three mention wanting to read the next volume right away. >.<; That could be bad. *sigh*

Re: Devil's Advocate

I'd say you're doomed. ^_^

Have fun.

I think I'd go for the 11 volume set. While it's disappointing to have spent money on books you didn't like, it's torture to have to wait months to read the rest of a series you've really gotten into. xD

*laughs* Avoiding torture is something I would very much like to do if it's at all possible. ^^; In my worst case, I lasted all of a day or two between receipt of the first couple of books for a series and buying the rest of the books. I haven't broken down quite that badly since, but... >.>

Hmmm, the benefit of not buying them all at once is that you don't read the whole series all at once and get to stretch it out more. Do you have a used bookstore near you to sell the books to if you don't like them? If you do and it's cheaper to buy them all at once then I'd say go for it.
Soo, what is the series anyway? Just curious over what has put you in such a dilemma.

^^;; Being able to stretch the series out over time also implies a level of self-discipline that I'm not convinced I possess. :P

There is a used bookstore over in Vancouver (an hour flight away), so it is a possibility. (I do like to use the shop whenever I go there, so it's not that unreasonable.)

The series I'm looking at is Victorian Rose Tailor (light novels). I'm reading a side story in Cobalt magazine which seems interesting, but I have no idea about the rest of the series. >.>

Oh, I remember you mentioning those before! The reason I asked about the bookstore is because I have a rather awesome used bookstore near me that I sell old manga to and use the store credit to pick up new stuff. They have a really good selection too...
