Kitchen silliness

(Whoa! *Not* Hakushaku for a change. ^^;;)

For some reason over the past couple of weeks, I've been craving cookies and other sweets. ^^; The problem with this is that, as much as I love sweets, I don't like sweet sweets. (<--Does that make sense?)

After fiddling a bit with Ossi dei Morti cookies, I'm wanting to make things like caramels, sponge toffee, and (choco covered?) malted milk balls. ^^; Has anyone out there made any of these? Also, Valentine's Day is coming up soon, and I'm starting to debate making something chocolate for the house again. (Probably something cookie-ish since I'm on a cookie kick right now, but maybe I'll go so far as choco truffles...? It's been a few years since I last did anything, so the trauma of doing chocos / choco cake has waned quite a bit.) Anyone have any choco/sweets-making plans this year?

Otherwise, we've since discovered grinding macadamia nuts in the coffee grinder makes for macadamia butter. ^^;; It's too soft/oily a nut to grind that way. FSU spent a chunk of time chopping macadamias for cookies. :P

(I have shipping notice! *___* In a couple/few days (hopefully), I disappear off the face of the earth for a few days. ^o^ Can't wait to read about the wedding insanity~!)

*laughs* It'll take time before it gets here, so there's a chance I'll be able to get the next part of book 1 translated before then (as well as your last dj hopefully). ^^; But... not sure how long it'll take me off the face of the earth. ^^; Definitely looking forward to finding out what happens next in the story, especially what happened the night of and the day after their wedding. ^o^

I made green tea truffles for xmas, but my truffles never turn out quite right because I have hot hands. In fact, that's my problem with pastry in general. Thank goodness for food processors :)

of course I'm insanely excited for wedding stories :)

Nifty! How'd they turn out? (Recipe? :P ) It's been a long time since I've done truffles or chocos, and green tea (tencha) is something we do have here... Hmm...

Will be sure to post lots of details. ^_^

They were pretty tasty. I used both powdered sencha and the sweet powdered green tea by maeda-en (a lot, because chocolate is very strong) I used a bag of 65% cacao chocolate chips, and about 1/4 c of the powdered tea (half sweet half straight). I just put the two in a bowl then added hot cream. After I had the balls, I covered them in white chocolate and dusted them with the sencha, but they were never as charmingly round as they should have been because of my hot hands :( You could probably steep the tea in the hot cream instead.

Cheers for the info!

Hmm... so you did dark centres? I'm thinking about trying white choco centres (not sure about the outer coating yet)... Will have to think about amounts a bit more since I have to grind the tencha into powder in the mortar & pestle. ^^;

Depending on your recipe, you could throw the nuts in the food processor with a couple of tablespoonfuls of sugar. The sugar helps prevent it all turning into butter.

Now I want cookies. *sigh*

Thanks for the tip! ^_^

Cookies and tea are so yummy. ^_^ This batch was done with macadamias, and I'm still debating if I should've dipped them lightly in white choco or similar. ^^; (So much for not too sweet...)

Oh, you lost me at the white chocolate. The darker the chocolate the better. Omnomnom
