Beyond well done soon to become a briquette...

August 17th, 2008 (07:37 pm)

Heat, heat, more heat, grumbles from the clouds and a brief gust of wind, and now more heat. *sigh* FWIW, I scanned the cards(?) that came in Vampire Knight DVD 1 and ULed them to a gallery here on LJ. There's very little there, but... ^^; The CD drama that came with the volume was really cute, but I don't have it to share. ^^;;

Otherwise, does anyone out there know how to choose blackberries?? (No not the handheld device, the things you eat and hopefully don't end up making puckered up faces from.) I've had a couple of horrible years at trying to buy these things, and am starting to despair of ever buying them again. >.<;; Any hints you can give would be most appreciated. This weekend's purchase has since been sauced to be added to my breakfast for however long it lasts. >.>

That said, if there are any fellow Calgarians out there who haven't heard yet, this weekend is Heritage Park's annual Fall Harvest Sale. It's a great opportunity to get out and buy plenty of fresh produce at old time... well, not quite 'old time' prices since they were definitely up last year, but it's still quite low for what you're getting. All proceeds go to various charities including the ACH and the Cancer Board. I wonder what we'll be going for since we hit the Farmers' Market on the weekend, but... ^^; We'll probably be looking at some fruit and corn by this weekend. :P I'll have to remember to raid for loons and toons before heading down. :P (Whoohoo! I get my gingerbread people! ^o^ I love hitting the bakery there! *___* )

Here's to hoping the heat dies down a bit more before all brains end up thoroughly stewed and become brainz. ^^; I guess it would've been appropriate for the Zombie Walk over in Vancouver though. ^^;

I miss blackberries ... used to be able to pick them just about anywhere in Richmond... my gramma made killer jam... but real estate too hot a commodity... if were picking them, then the ones that come away from the bush without much effort are best. Staring at a basket of them trying to decide... harder to say :(

Fruit crops not so good this year from cherries to strawberries to blueberries (all BC grown) ~_~

Shall we ooze?

Unfortunately, I'm staring at them in a basket. >.<; Hmm... the blueberries we got out here were decent, but I agree, cherries were a bit lacking. (FSU's allergic to strawberries, so I can only stare at them wistfully. ^^; ) Of the fruits we've had so far, the plums (red hearts maybe?) have been decent. ^_^ I'll be trying out the peaches next since we picked up two varieties.

Can't wait to get my hands on some Taber corn though. *___* Serious hail damage in the area wiped out part of the crop, but hopefully it'll be good. ^o^

Either ooze or puddle. ^^;

Haven't seen any peaches... Okanagan usually from. Corn just started seeing, not sure what varieties.

Hmm... big and plump looking then for blackberries.

Ganbarre on getting the new 同人誌 we want without wallet whimpering too much ^^;

SUPPOSED to be cooler (high 20) and wet next few days... ain't happening so far. But yes, we do have a breeze at least!

Peaches here presumably from the Okanagan. (Definitely from BC but fairly green.)

From what I understand peaches and cream should be out now. For Taber corn, the yellow varieties mature later. (Not sure how far out Taber corn makes it.)

Today's high 33C. Tonight's low 13C! ^^;; Can't wait for a bit of a cool down, but down to 13's a bit harsh a drop. ^^;

Our high today was last night's LOW so improvement but still humid. Maybe down to 14 tonight. At least it isn't hailing (back east past week) ^^

Sounds like fun! Wish I could help you with the Blackberries. Unfortunately, my parents aren't berry people. How weird is that?

You should come to Arizona. It's a dry heat here. XD

Oh my! ^^; Not that I can say a huge amount. Male parental here doesn't like the little seeds in things like raspberries and blackberries (although blueberries and strawberries are okay).

Dry is fine, but I'll stay away from the heat thanks. >.<;; Anything beyond ~25C and I'm starting to puddle. Makes me wonder how I survived summers in Japan... (let alone out east!) ^^;

I like the blackberries that make me want to suck my face inside out! Yummmmmm!

That said, I accidentally left some blackberries for a good week in my fridge. I was in a weird mood. However, since I don't waste blackberries, I finally washed and ate them. Not a tart turn-your-face-inside-out one in the lot. *sulks*

Short answer: let 'em ripen a little longer. Or send 'em to Ginny and demand photos. ^_^

Hmm... I'm not sure why, but berries don't last well in our fridge. (Better than out on the counter, but they tend to get chummy with "fun guys" and go furry when left beyond a couple days. >.> )

Or send 'em to Ginny and demand photos. ^_^

There's heat here too; although California usually has dry heat, there's also been high humidity for a while too. Most of the area where I live doesn't have AC, even a lot of the new apts./condos/houses don't have central air.

I have to go to Mitsuwa soon and see if I can find anything on Vampire Knight or Saiunkoku...I got my first doujinshi at AX, a Ryuuki x Shuurei fluff. Also saw a group of VK cosplayers, complete with Shiki.

Blackberries, yum! I know that a church that my grandmother used to go to had wild raspberries growing and we would always pick some and eat them. Hm...they can't be too squishy, firm...and a nice color. I know you can usually store them in the fridge, but with the heat you can't put them on the countertop. Is it just the berries your fridge has a problem with or is it other things too? Could be that the temp is set too cold. Usually it's not a good idea to put berries of any kind in plastic bags...(I know when I cut up strawberries for my waffles, I put them in a plastic bowl with a lid and they were fine)

I hope you have fun at the Harvest Sale - it does sound like fun! I like that the proceeds go to charities - that's always good! We have a weekly Farmers Market, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Wow! I guess it really does depend on the area. ^^;

I'd definitely suggest VK. I'm looking forward to the next anime season for that one. ^o^

Well, apparently the fridge does have a coldness issue, as I discovered the other day when the tofu froze. ^^; I'm going to have to try fiddling with the berry issue again. It's such a pain not being able to keep berries for very long. >.>

I really enjoy going to the Farmers' Market. The one we go to here now is probably what's known as the 'trendy market'. It's great for atmosphere but decidedly not a true farmers' market. (It has lots of fresh produce, but concentrates more on organic goods than bulk fresh produce.)

Can't wait for the Harvest Sale. It's always great fun. Many people bring their kids' wagons to carry the heavier items back to their cars. (They do have people with dollies to help folks get their things back to their cars, but those who can, bring their own 'transport' (and extra hands). ^^;
