It might be a bit hard to understand since you're jumping right into the climax to the story. ^^;
Downstairs. The Sasakuras have broken in through the full-length mirror that was hiding a door. Hirota and Naru have gone down to fight the Sasakuras while Mai, Masako, Midori, and Reiko try to break through one of the windows' shutters that have been blocked, preventing their escape.
N: "The door." That's all Naru said as he pointed to the door. He leaned against the window at his back. Hirota just nodded and hid himself in the shadow of the door that led to the hallway. It didn't matter how much they tried to calm his breathing, it still sounded loud in their ears.
Naru nodded and leaned against the window even more.
He heard his name called and frowned. This voice--perhaps it was just his own memory playing tricks, but he'd heard it before. He looked around trying to figure out where it was coming from when he realised it was from behind him. From the mirror touching his back.
"......You can talk. That's good."
Naru smiled slightly. It wasn't an actual voice nor were there any actual sound waves. It came through the hot line that existed between the two brothers.
(......I finally reached you......)
A hint of relief could be heard in his voice.
(Now's not the time for minor pleasantries. How many are there?) Naru replied sharply.
(Three of them. Their possession's deep.)
(......Can you tell where they are?)
(No. I can't see the real world that well.)
A wry smile could be felt through the line.
(I need to charge. Can you toss to me at a distance?)
(I can't tell where you are unless you're standing in front of a mirror. It'd be better if there's a point of contact.)
(You really are useless.)
As he said that, he reached back with his left hand and touched the mirror.
There was no logic to what they did. Naru only knew how to use that power through experience.
He pictured a small point of light. Without concentrating too hard on it, he imagined that light doing a round inside his body before tossing it to Gene. When it comes back, it's grown into a much brighter sphere. And by repeating that several times, it grows into a very powerful force.
Using the palm of his hand which was in contact with the mirror as a focus, he tossed the energy to Gene. In a similar manner, the energy came back from that same place.
(It's slow in coming back.)
It used to be virtually instantaneous, but now, it took about the same amount of time as it took to blink.
(You're really far away. Although I'm not sure why.)
Naru frowned slightly. There was no logic to what they did; they only had their own experience to go by, so this sort of small difference could have large effects.
Something rattled - the sound of something heavy lightly hitting the wall. A floorboard creaked.
There was a condenser in Naru's body and even Naru didn't know how much it could handle. As the spot of light went around inside him, energy became stored there. It was important to store as much of that as possible. As proof of that, he started feeling pressure on his right palm. He wet the palm of his hand with Midori's bottle of scented water that he'd put in his jacket pocket. If he didn't, he could end up seriously burning his hand when he released the energy.
There was a small metallic sound. It was the sound of the doorknob moving.
Masaru tried getting up. Naru pushed him aside as he retreated down the hallway. Seeing the man coming at him unarmed, Naru opened the door to the living room and tumbled inside. There were no mirrors in the living room. Having no choice, he went to the window and opened the curtain. He didn't know if he could use the window, which reflected the room interior, as a mirror.
The energy he tossed took a moment before returning. Masaru staggered as he charged at Naru. Naru avoided the charge, and Masaru ran straight into the glass. There was a dull sound as he cracked the glass.
Naru touched him with his palm, and Masaru collapsed to the floor. At the same time Lin came running in.
--The psychics had returned.
Naru's knees almost gave beneath him as the tension left him. He supported himself by leaning against the glass behind him.
"Are you alright?"
"You used your power, didn't you?"
Naru raised both his hands lightly at the sound of his icy voice.
"I'm alright, so give me a break."
He heard the tense voice from behind him; from the other side of the glass.
(He's left that guy. --Kosori's coming.)
Naru's eyes widened.
"Where is he?"
(The back door.)
"While Sekiguchi might've been taken care of, what about the five people in this house?"
"They might've moved on after what just happened."
"So, it's uncertain."
"Well, they'll slowly disappear."
"Apparently, they're gone."
It was Naru who said that. Again, he was standing in front of a mirror and leaning lightly against it.
"So, it's safe now?"
Naru nodded. He glanced at the mirror.
He directed those words to the other end of the mirror.
(It's alright. They've become really weak. At this rate, they'll soon disappear......)
While it might be cruel to disappear while still carrying such grief, Naru thought spirits were essentially remnants of emotions. So it was better for both the living and the dead for them to disappear.
(Come to think of it, I forgot to say something.)
Naru glanced at the mirror when he heard the voice call.
(What is it?)
(--It's been awhile.)
Naru smiled wryly.
The voice was very distant. The place was starting to dissolve.
(......I'm really sleepy......)
Naru smiled faintly. He remembered how Gene had never been able to wake up when he was supposed to.
His other half's thoughts ended at that.
"That's an incredible sight," Takigawa whispered as he looked at Naru standing in front of the mirror. Mai and Masako nodded while Hirota gave a twisted smiled.
"Seeing him so attached to a mirror like that makes him seem like a complete and utter narcissist."
"You're absolutely right."
"He's so attached, it's creepy......"
And now that I'm semi-awake again, back to Mona's bit... (I always forget how much time that thing takes to work through. ^^; )
