What is this, dead systems r us?!

July 9th, 2007 (05:35 pm)

current mood: bored

So, the office system went down on Friday... I'm not quite sure what to make of that except that I knew the hard drive's been sounding pretty bad lately. What? I have fingers of death or something? But thanks to that, I'm now looking into desktop systems. Y'know, I'd like to start pulling out of the hardware hunt soon... >.> Oh well, the shop I was planning on buying from apparently forgot to pay their domain reg bills so the site's currently offline. ^^; I know the shop's still there because FSU just bought a new gaming mouse and a tablet for me there. Now all I need is my silly little laptop... (which has once again been delayed. Hopefully for the last time, but if I don't hear something about the first of the high-res systems having been received for building soon (it's 3-5 days to build and test the system after they get the chassis in, plus shipping time), I could end up making a rash purchase...).

And male parental has given me notice: water is going offline on Saturday. Apparently, there's a leak in the work he'd done earlier when he'd put in a bypass (at least I think it's a bypass he put in). Anyhow, the idea of another full day without water (sic no toilets!) is less than amusing and beyond annoying, so I'm going to have to decide what to do that day. (Last time, I stuck it out. I'm not being so foolhardy again.)

I'm sort of stuck between going to the zoo, which apparently has some new exhibits but potentially no food services due to staff shortages (besides the dinosaur park is always great fun); going to Heritage Park, getting my season pass, visiting with the ghosts there, having yummy gingerbread women(? they're pretty hippo-hipped... or is that a hint of the caloric intake?), sausage rolls, and butter tarts, and otherwise enjoying turn of the 20th C living; or possibly going to the library and doing some research either for GH1 or for a new base concept that came to mind recently. I guess the library wouldn't be all bad except I'd have to go to the central branch (downtown). (Nevermind the fact that the zoo is way out on the opposite side of the city...) I don't think the local branch has anything and the other branch relatively nearby probably won't be much better. (I've never been in that one.) >.> Oh wait a minute... I wonder if there mightn't be something interesting over at the museum...? I'll have to check their website. (Now watch me decide that it's too much of a pain to boot myself to various parts of the city and try sticking out the water outage. *laughs* I'd have to be pretty insane, but I can see me doing it... :P )

And FSU and I hit the Farmers' Market again this past weekend. I swear, the food bill skyrockets in the summer because of that place. ^^; But, besides my beloved elk jerky, I picked up a container of gooseberries. Does anyone know of anything to do with gooseberries other than just eat them?

While the Calgary Farmers' Market is rather upscale yuppyish in style, I find it lots of fun and filled with far too much temptation. While buying some stuff, one clerk told a kid to hold out her fingers and stuck raspberries on the end of them: raspberry pops! *laughs* She did the same to FSU and I after we'd paid and were about to leave too. ^^; (Kids fingers are one thing, but adult fingers...? *laughs* )

Oh yeah! Does anyone have a good chai spice recipe? FSU normally buys just the spice mix from one of the local tea merchants here but they've been out of stock for some time now and she's getting quite low. (She has lots of regular chai teas, but she likes to add the spice mix to some of her black teas.)

Otherwise... I finally read ch 1 of Twinkle Star. *laughs* I *love* how the first chapter ended! That was *hilarious*! I'll have to see how this one goes. ^^;; Apparently I DLed the *thumbnails* for the first chapter, so when I actually looked at it... ^^;; Yeah, it was decidedly illegible. Shall see what I decide to do with that one. I haven't exactly been watching the community (I haven't been watching any of LJ except for maybe a handful of journals) so... ^^; Yeah, yet another "once the new system arrives" thing. If only the sea-turtles Compal is using to ship the units would get here already. >.> Or are they still trying to harness the suckers? *sigh*

GH - Yasuhara

Shiny MacBookPro has new video card. And Shadow has 24-7 (okay, fine, GinnyHours) tech support. ^_^

Ginlandia will have water on Friday. *tempts*

I started to translate the French translation of ch1 of Hoshi wa Utau. I have new respect for your translation work. (Not that I was disrepectful before, but I'd forgot how much work it is.) It didn't help that my French is so rusty. :/

Temptress! You do realise GinnySupport would be needed pretty much right after "turn on the power", right? ^^; Shiny new MBP is *so* tempting because of the graphics card. The top-of-the-line model card especially has me wavering, especially when you consider the Mac's general strength with media. Gimme my 'puter! (Oops, did I type that? :P )

Double temptress! I was actually starting to debate going to Vancouver for the day since it's been so long since I went there (the J bookstore is 5-10 mins drive from the airport). *sigh*

I seem to remember reading somewhere that you'd done a lot of French classes before. (Were they translation classes?) I know I sure can't say much since my French has gone to Hell in a handbasket and isn't looking like it's planning on returning any time soon. ^^;; Good luck and have fun with it though! ^o^

Seriously, though, if you really want to go with Mac and the only thing standing in your way is the OS, I'm perfectly willing to help. A few people on my friends list have converted in the last 1.5-2 years, and they're very happy.

(Also, song names & tags in non-Roman characters don't get turned into gibberish. I really hope I'm not going to have to re-do the tags on all of my Asian music. *cries*)

Ginlandia has a fluffy Daisycat for your petting pleasure. *tempts*

I did translation from French to English in my first go-round of university. That was a bunch of years ago. (When I was at the job of Hansard joy, there was another temp there doing that very program. It made me sad to've left it and to've lost my French. ugh. :/ )

^_^ It's not just the OS. It's more an issue of "Why buy a Mac if all I'm going to do is run Windows?" I think it's still a bit hard for me to switch over in terms of the apps. *sigh*

That said, I was thinking about a low-end MacBook for the bedroom (a lounging computer if you will) until the Eee showed up. As it is now, depending on what the news is for the Compal, I'm thinking about a 13.3 Asus, which has a bit more power overall, as a backup system. The only thing that's keeping me from buying it is "2 weeks", the time they keep saying it will take for my laptop to ship, and shipping. If the Asus laptop were available locally, I would've jumped on it by now even though it's a Vista system. (I seem to hesitate on items that will take several days to ship and keep hoping they'll show up locally. ^^; )

Aaahh! Kitties! ^o^ And there's always a good chance of there being a good exhibit at the museum... *___*

Damn, they're taking a long time. That's really sad. Hmmm-- point: museums usually have air conditioning and working (if sometimes messy) facilities. Can't give you a guarantee on the park.

I hear gooseberries make wonderful jam. XD I think.

I don't know why it keeps getting pushed back like this. I'd hate to know how much email the shops are having to field from impatient customers, but until Compal gets things moving more smoothly... *shrug* Some poor folks pre-ordered the system at the end of *May* and most of us are all still waiting. *sigh* It wouldn't be quite so bad if we were told the systems would be shipping mid-late July in the first place, but that's not what we were told. As it is, the Dell 1520 and MBP have all been released and started shipping. About the only one being delayed there is the LED version of the Dell 1330. *sigh*

I still haven't decided which way I'll go yet. Thankfully all of the places have proper facilities though. ^^;; Sadly, there's nothing of major interest at the museum (minor interest possibly related to the library research, but I'm not sure it'll be close enough). *sigh* I miss Montreal.

*laughs* I don't think I have enough to make jam. ^^;; I'll have to try munching on them and see how that goes.

I've never had gooseberries. Think they'd go with pancakes? Hmmm... *contemplates*

~_~ Do you have some sort of indoor, exotic market? I know here in Tucson there's a place called the 17th Street Market (which I keep pestering my parents about) that's supposed to be really cool.

...I really should travel at some point. *_*

I'm not sure what you mean by "exotic market" exactly. Exotic makes me think more foreign foods (we do have specialised food markets throughout the city, and some ethnic eateries at the CFM, but most of the ethnic markets are scattered throughout the city rather than being there). ^^;

The CFM has a little game meat (elk and bison) as well as more specialised fare (honeys, nuts and granola, ostrich and emu soaps and lotions...) as well as the usual butcher, produce, homestyle fare, etc. When I used to go to the farmers' market on Blackfoot Trail, things were different as it's a proper farmers' market--out in the middle of a large field with temporary tents and mostly caselot produce, fruit, and meats for whatever you might want. At the CFM, things can be bought individually or in grocery-store size quantities and the prices are more yuppy market than true farmers' market pricing. ^^;

Kyou & Tohru hug (flamika)

You live! *dances* And there're so many fun-sounding possibilities before you. *_*

If you decide you feel like translating Twinkle Stars when you have time and technology, there will be praise and adoration! *_* Unless I'm missing something, all that's turned up in English is a very rough translation of the French translation of ch. 1, and the also-very-rough ch. 1-2 summaries on RosettaStone. (I feel all shameless asking. *hides* But it looks so adorable!)

Sadly "live" is probably going a bit too far. ^^; I'm going to be tying myself into a hangman's noose if tech doesn't arrive soon. >.<;

*blink* I'm surprised no one else has stepped in on the translation side. Like I said, I haven't really been following the communities/forums for this one yet. I'll let you know what I'm planning in terms of projects (including the ones that were being worked on when Yggy went on strike) once I'm all set up again. ^_^ In the meantime, I can definitely confirm Twinkle Stars has a really cute start. ^o^ I haven't read ch 2 yet, but I at least nabbed the proper sized scans for it. ^^; Will let you know more a bit later. ^_^

I love to romp!

"Yggy" *grin* Any time I feel that OGiVi is too precious or cute or silly, I'll remember it's in good company with Yggy. ^_~

*laughs* Yggy has a proper name too. It just takes too long to type "Yggdrasil". :P What's sad is that I've started thinking of it as "Yggy" now. ^^;

I could at least mostly follow the translation-of-translation of ch. 1, and I looked at the ch. 2 raws, and I can feel myself trying to fall in love with it. I'm being stern and reminding myself that I can't just assume I'll love it as much as Furuba, but I get such a good feeling from it. *^^*

*laughs* So far, it seems to be off to a fun start. I finally read ch 2 today, and it's definitely showing promise. ^o^ Which reminds me, has anything come up yet about ch 3? I'm not even sure about where this is being discussed other than one LJ community and Rosetta...? Are there any other places for info on it yet?

lonely Yuki (papermoon_icons)

I haven't heard of any other places in English--the chapter scans have been coming from SubaFuruba, so there may be more French discussion there. I haven't heard anything about mailing lists or anything like that. :/

(Also haven't heard anything about ch. 3, unless it came out overnight.)

Welcome back, Kage-chan! I missed seeing your posts online...sorry to hear about the computer woes.

Now that Saiunkoku's been licensed, are you thinking of fansubbing another series, or is it too much of a time-suck?

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: July 10th, 2007 05:54 pm (UTC)

The computer woes wouldn't be a problem if the silly thing would just get here. I've been waiting 2? 3? weeks since putting in the actual order after deliberately waited until when I thought the system would start shipping. *sigh*

I'm definitely not against tackling a new title for fansubbing and I'm pretty sure the editors wouldn't mind having stuff to edit, but it really depends on finding a title that demands to be subbed. So far, nothing's reached through the computer screen and grabbed me by the throat. ^^;

Good to hear from you. :) I've never had gooseberries, but yum, raspberries!

Sorry to hear about all your computer woes. I'd go insane without mine.

What I've seen of Twinkle Stars looks quite cute. We all know that Takaya can spin a wonderful story, so I have hope that this may turn into something that will suck me in. :)

^_^;; Looks like I have to do something with the gooseberries; either tart them or maybe mix them with another berry and make crumble or pie. Shall see what I go with. ^_^

So far Twinkle Stars looks to be promising, so we'll see. Now that I've actually read the first couple of chapters, I'm curious to see how it goes. ^_^
