FWIW, the system I'm waiting for will hopefully be getting released sometime this/next week. "Mid-June" was the expected shipping date, but final specs still aren't available. >.<; I'm hoping to pick up the Compal IFL90, which is a whitebook/whitebox system, and am waiting for final word on which video card it comes with (nvidia 8600M GS or GT). The thing that scares me about the system is that it's a bit *too* cheap, so I'm a bit worried about build quality. Also, I haven't heard anything about any Canadian shops carrying this system yet, so I'll have to import it from the US. Eek! Shall see. (Good thing the loonie is doing well compared to the USD right now. I hope there are no additional taxes beyond the standard GST for computers...)
That said, during all this wait time, I've run into some rather interesting items. :P Perhaps most notable would be the OLPC. An interesting idea and certainly nothing I'll ever get my hands on (or am extremely unlikely to ever get my hands on), and even if it were possible, I don't think I'd *want* to get my hands on it. :P
On the other hand, Asus has announced their Eee. The target starting price (~$200) is such that I'm thinking about getting one just for the hell of it (if possible). :P I believe it does come with a modem jack and wireless, so it would make for a cute system that you wouldn't be overly upset should it die or be stolen. :P
There are lots of other ultra-portables of course (including the new 10th Anniversary Sony Vaio... *___* ) but these super low-end ones are *so* amusing! ^^;
Anyhow, I'm seriously hoping it'll only be another couple of weeks of brainlessness, but it really depends on when that system actually starts shipping. It could be worse. I'm hearing August shipping dates for Lenovo right now.
Which reminds me, Takaya Natsuki's latest manga should be out now, isn't it? I'll have to do some hunting about it. ^^; I won't be able to read it for about another month unless I can find it online. ^^;;
And... the Canadian government is determined to keep me in country for the next long while I see. I managed to pick up the passport app form only to discover that it's changed from the last time I applied. :/ Now, not only do you need a guarantor, but you also need two references. In a pinch, I suppose I could use FSU's friend since I've known her since I was a kid as well. (Not friends, but we've known one another for aeons). Everyone else I know all live out of city if I'm not mistaken. My uni friends are all in Vancouver or Montreal, and my HS friends are all scattered and I haven't bothered keeping in touch with any of them for... a year? two years? at least. :/ (Friends from after that... the lab moved to BC while I was in Japan so the folks I knew there would probably be there or maybe here, but again, I haven't kept in touch with pretty much anyone. My own fault for being so anti-social. ^^;; )
Oh well. Time to play catch-up again. ^^;;
