Reply: This time, I think he wasn't. It's pretty clear when he really uses PK because of its effects on his health. (Spoon-bending doesn't quite qualify for "really" using PK for him.) ^^;

I look forward to seeing him do that big PK blast thing I've heard so much about... I also heard that Gene helps him control his power or something like that - how does that work? And why doesn't Lin like Japanese people? What did Mai and Gene tell him in response to that?

Yeah, basically Gene acted like an amplifier for Naru so that he could get up the energy to use his PK. Without Gene, all that power has to come from inside him which is why it's so devastating to his health. Basically Naru would "toss" a seed of energy to Gene who'd bounce it back and each time it bounced between the two it would grow more and more powerful until Naru eventually released it.

IIRC, Lin's dislike against the Japanese is based on history, not anything that anyone's done to him personally. He has an innate dislike of Japanese people because of what Japan did to his country. Gene and Mai both told him that if he was going to hate them, then they wanted it to be for something that they'd done, and not something that they couldn't help. Things like ethnicity, sex, or being an orphan were all things outside their control and they didn't want to be hated for those sorts of things. ^^;

I watched episode 16 last night, and one of Lin's lines jumped out at me. Near the very end of the episode Lin says Fortunately, it was amateurs who were making it and carrying it out. In my case, I could kill a person with this one sheet. I don't remember that from the Del Rey version. Off the top of your head, do you remember if it's in the Japanese manga or perhaps in the novel?

This is something they knew about beforehand. In the video that was taken of that experiment, supposedly Gene was with Naru and acting as an amplifier then.

It's pretty much a direct quote from the manga and was like that in the novels as well. I'd have to listen more carefully to know if it's word-for-word between the anime and manga, but the meanings are all the same.

That bouncing power thing is so cool! So does Gene have any powers of his own and are they similar to Naru's? Or different? And did they have a mental/psychic bond of some sort (with all that bouncing thing...)?

Lin is such an interesting character ... I can't wait to find out more about him! I'm expecting Mai to tell him that same thing Gene did pretty soon in the episodes...

Gene was a true medium, so when he was possessed by a German spirit, he spoke German even though he didn't know the language. Likewise, he could see spirits clearly and was much more capable in that sense than Masako. Sadly almost all mention of him was carefully eliminated from the anime. >.< Gene and Naru shared a "hotline" or telepathic connection, but this only worked between the two of them. After Gene died, this connection seemed to get knocked out of whack and so it was easier for Gene to contact Mai than Naru. However, while he soon figured out how to contact Naru, Naru wouldn't "listen". ^^;

That scene in its entirety(!) comes up in ep 19. ^o^

I was disappointed with the lack of animation before. This is a definite improvement and a lot more creepy. (I just finished watching this episode, btw and really enjoyed it. Dream Naru seems to me to be Mai's subconsciousness and not Naru, eh? )

Actually, GH really reminds me of "Medium" (I keep thinking of Mai has having similar powers to Alison Dubois's...) and "4400"...
