Maundering mind--GH Clues (WIP)

January 17th, 2007 (12:09 am)

(Yay! Heat's back! ^^;)

Seeing how I've pretty much given up on getting through ep 27's translation tonight, I thought I'd start scribbling down the interesting scenes that have greater meaning than one might first suspect upon seeing them for GH. :P

One of the greatest things about this series is how things progress and build upon previous points until the whole puzzle falls into place. So the puzzle pieces...

Story 1:
- Mai complains about Naru calling her by her first name and without honorifics; Naru replies along the lines of "you just did the same thing"
- Naru's *17* yet head of a company (guardian?)
- Masako is a top class medium
- Masako thinks she might have met Naru somewhere but Naru has no such recollection
- Naru smiles in Mai's dream

Story 2:
- once again, they have a mountain of equipment...
- Lin calls Naru "Naru"
- Naru's strange certainty that the doll wasn't the problem

Story 3:
- Naru doesn't talk back to Masako? (not really important actually :P)
- Lin's notes are all typed in English
- when bending the spoon for Kasai-san, the spoon snapped
- the image of Naru's room
- "you mean Lin-san's the onmyouji?" "something like that"--fully revealed in Blood-Soaked Maze
- Naru and Mai were both essentially unharmed in the fall down the manhole despite all the rubble at the bottom
- Naru collapses from "anemia"
- no name on the name plate at the hospital despite having a private room
- Lin's reaction to Naru having bent a spoon
- when showing everyone his "trick" the spoon didn't snap

Story 4:
- speculation Naru may have a sponsor of sorts who finances everything esp. considering how expensive Shibuya Ward is

Missing clues:
- Naru's notes are all in English (missing in the anime?; from story 1)
- in her dream, Naru laughs and tells Mai she's mistaken when she asks him about dating Masako--he actually talks about something other than work. :P (story 2 novel; not in the manga or anime)
- Mai tells Naru something was bothering her and he responds with "So?" eventually saying something like "I'm afraid I have no time to spare listening to anything unless it's for work." (story 3; not in the anime)
- If Naru pounded on the wall, he could have woken Lin (story 3; not in the anime)
- Mai demands to know if being able to bend and snap a spoon at a touch is normal (story 3; snapping the spoon wasn't mentioned)

Yoshii - language

This is going to drive me insane now. Thanks! ;p I love this show to much and only partially because it makes me speculate on so many things.

*hums happily despite quietly going insane*

*laughs* Could be worse. I only started cluing in to things around the fifth manga novel that something was odd and then going back through things and hunting down all the weirdnesses. Of course, I then promptly read the *last* novel series and spoiled everything or me. T_T

GH - Naru dakara!

*fidgets* Y'know how I've vowed never to demand that a fansubber hurry? Does that count if the fansubber taunts with tiny details and clues? ^_~ *fidget* However, if I try to hurry you with 9, then I'll be hurried in turn on 8's note. *hides*

I have noticed that there are 2 people Naru addresses without honorifics: Mai & Lin. (Maybe John? I can't remember for sure now.)

*laughs* I know, I'm evil sometimes. ^^; Well, FWIW, if I can finish ep 27's translation and tweaking tonight, I'll probably start in on ep 10 next, unless you haven't started on ep 7 and want me to do that one. ^^; (My current plan is either 7 then 10 or 10 then 7). :P

Yup, he uses no honorifics with Mai, Lin, or John. Lin's understandable to a degree since they've obviously been working together and know one another. Mai's kind of weird and she complained about it, but Naru hasn't changed on that one. Interesting because if you read the clip I wrote story 2, Naru called Masako "Masako", but in story 3 he calls her Hara-san again. :P

can't brain today maker unknown

It's up to you which you do. I'm determined to get Shoumyou 6 back to you today. I'll do that first thing when I get home. And my "devoted to Shadow (work)" afternoon tomorrow has been truncated by an hour of work. *sigh* But it's convenient in other ways (like returning that thing and picking up that other thing). This is just a long way of telling you that I doubt I'll get another episode timed & off to you until Saturday. Let me know which one you want it to be.

Real life will prevail. ^^;

Hmm... how about if you do Shoumyou 7 and I work on GH 10. If I'm really quick, I might be able to start in on Kokumono 28 while you're working on the notes screens so you'll be able to have more Shoumyou to enjoy after they're done too. (Unless you prefer to vary what you work on?). ^_^ Heather and I might cry, but you can have lots of fun with Guren that way. ^^; (Mind you, it'll mean I get to have Seiran... :P )

Kokumono - Seiran (not mine to save)

Now that I think about it, why don't you do 10 first? If you do 7 first, then I have to do 28. Then again, we're over the worst of the Saku-twitch (until 31), and there's hurting!Seiran…

So, I guess I babbled a bit and I'm basically back to "you let me know what you'd like me to do". *hides*

Tiny Toons - Gogo Dodo

(If LJ would let me edit comments, this wouldn't look so spam-like. *hides*)

I just went back & checked. It's interesting that to Ayako, he says "Hara-san", but to Mai, he says "Masako". I choose to interpret that as meaningful. ^_^ *pets broken arrogant boy*

*blink* I never noticed that until you pointed it out. ^^; Interesting. ^^ (And I've now been just as spammy as you! *laughs*)

gh_naru mai head shots

In the missing clues section:
- I had forgotten about Naru's story 1 notes being in handwritten cursive English. I had to go back and check the manga just to be sure that it was there. LOL
- I wish the manga had included the scene where dream!Naru says that he wasn't dating Masako. That would have been so nice to see dramatized. *sigh*

Thank you for sharing this summary with us!

Man I also forgot that Naru's notes were in english, I was gonna post about that on AS a while back. I remember cuz Mai thinks "I cant read your writing" or something like that. The lack of nameplate bothers me still and after seeing vol 9 it bothers me even more...

Vol 9... the second half of the Yoshimi case? Yup. That would leave question marks floating over the head. ^_^

Oh, you guys are such teases!

But I've been enjoying the notes about the anime/manga differences for Shounen Onmyouji, Saiunkoku, and Ghost Hunt.

Have also been wondering about Naru's true identity, because, hey, 17? Can he even sign legal paperwork in Japan at that age? If he is just a regular boy (as opposed to being some sort of supernatural being himself), then I suspect that Lin may be his official guardian.

::settles back and prepares to enjoy the gradual revelation of the mysteries::

Bunny loves you

Can he even sign legal paperwork in Japan at that age?

Nope! Age of majority in Japan is 20.

as opposed to being some sort of supernatural being himself

That was what I thought in the very first episode, since he first showed up at Mai's school when they were trying to summon a ghost. Of course, I didn't think they really had summoned him, I just thought the story might take an ironic twist at some point, and that he would turn out to be something like a ghost. But then I got caught up in the show, and most of the time he seems so normal, so I forgot I'd even thought that until this post. Hmm...I wonder.

I just rewatched episode one a couple of nights ago, since I wanted to share Ghost Hunt with a friend, and see if she was interested enough to have me burn a disc for you, and the same thing occurred to me.

Too-pale boy, rather mysterious, always dresses in black, and manages to pop up just as ghosts are being summoned? One of the things that came out in rewatching the episode was Naru's rather evil sense of humor.

Re: Manga?! Novel?!?!?!? OMG!

The novel series can't be purchased at the moment as it's completely out of print. Those people in Japan might be able to get inter-library loans, but that's about all I've heard for being able to get hold of them. ^^;

In English, the manga is being published by Del Rey and is up to... vol 6 IIRC. I honestly don't know about Italian publications for it. Sorry. ^^;

Hiya. I love Kokumono to bits and I'm willling to give out a helping translating hand, since you guys have pretty much on your hands as it is. E.g. we could split the eps and do the rest of them much faster. I started translating ep 27 for a friend and then I thought that since I'm doing it anyway, I might as well make it count (or rather was told to=))). I will need much editing though. What do you think?
