Well, I've started looking a little at the manga scanlation project as well now, and have done a few pages as a test. I'm not looking for editing at the moment compared to general comment on the technical aspects (page size, font size, file size...). The pages can be found at:

http://shadow.randomfandom.com/saiunkoku/manga/vol1/

Comments would be appreciated. ^_^

Edit: I've added one page with a smaller font size (marked with an "a" at the end of the file name). It's definitely in the running for the default font unless it's too small for folks. ^^;;

i like the size, fonts
either my desktop screen is playing tricks on me or the colored scans seemed a bit off in coloring . Probably just my crappy screen. Will take a look on another high quality screen tomorrow.

otherwise *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALS*

Hm, I'll have to double check on the office computer in the morning. By the looks of things on my laptop, it looks like the colour scans might be a bit blue-shifted in places. (I didn't even notice until you mentioned it). ^^;; I'm wondering if this might not be a scanner issue. If it is... I suspect I'd have to get a new scanner to really fix the problem. :/

The file size, page and font looks perfect! It's very clean^^ The font is quite large than what I am accustomed to but I do like it^^

^^;; I tried shrinking the font down a bit for this page, so see what you think. I didn't even think about that until you mentioned it. I was aiming for something I'd be able to read comfortably even though the viewing software automatically shrinks the page to fit the screen. But shrinking the font would definitely allow me to write more... ^^;;

I think that's the usual font size other scanlation groups used..either way is fine..but more words the better^^

Thanks for scanlating!

Very good scanlating!!! The font is great and the wording stays inside the boxes and bubbles i'm very impressed. i've never seen/read this series before so i look forward to reading the rest!!

They are very nicely done scans! I do prefer the slightly smaller font-size as in page 7a. That size is plenty big enough to be readable, but also doesn't get too close to the bubble's edges. The only thing I'm not too keen on are all the parentheses for the translations rather than footnotes, but that's just a personal preference.

Now you have my interest piqued!

Cheers! The translation side isn't fixed yet, so I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect. I did a straight copy and paste from the manga translation I'd written up a while back. ^_^

Looks great! Thank you for the larger scans. ^_^

I think the smaller font works fine - it's still a fair size, and bold & clean enough to be easily read.

Yay! The pretties! And I could read the one with the smaller font just fine...

It seems like we come in in the middle of the story though? Is there an additional part that comes before, or am I just not knowledgeable enough about the fandom yet?

^^; That's the way the story starts. It'll all make sense when the story actually starts moving. (Anything earlier is generally covered flashback / history style at this point).

Looks nice but the text is hugging the bubble edges. Smaller font size (like in 7a) would be better.

Are you using Comic-Sans for your font? May I suggest Wild Words or Anime Ace? These are usually the standards I've seen. And a different font (maybe Augie) for handwritten text would help differentiate it. Stroking the text would help make it clearer and distinct when placed on a complex background.

The scans are nice and clean. The file size's okay and the page size's just right. Though, some pages seem to be a bit slanting. Also, try placing the sfx just outside the panel or the nearest white space.

Oops! I got carried away and included some editing aspects! Sorry 'bout that. ^^;

I am so far. Basically I looked for a font that I liked the looks of and could handle reading rather than go with convention--especially when you consider I pretty much never read scanlations so didn't know what it was. ^^; I'll take a look at the fonts though and see what they're like. Thanks for the feedback! ^_^

?? That went straight over my head. ^^;; I'm graphically challenged. Could you explain exactly what that means? ^^;

Ahaha...are you using Photoshop to edit? Stroking(or stroke) is a blending option for the layers (Right-click your text layer and select Blending Options. Stroke should be the bottom option.)

I have noticed that a lot of fonts are used in scanlating but it's mostly for effect-purposes.

I tried re-editing your scans and here are the results: ^^v
p04
p05 -->I stroked the text of the 'names' of the 8 sens
p06
p07
p08
p09

The font used in the speech bubbles is Wild Words. I like this font coz it's actually easy to read and doesn't waste much space. And I used Augie for the handwritten text. The rest of the fonts are just random fonts I picked out.

Hope this helps. ^^

^^;; Umm... actually Photoshop Elements which came with my tablet, so it'll be pretty limited. I found the option for stroke, but for some reason I can't get it to work yet. >_<;; I'm going to have to keep fighting with this... unless I can maybe convince you to help with the project? ^___^

I really like how those pages turned out! *___* Thanks for all your help! ^___^

I'm glad that you liked them. ^_^

I'd really love to help out but I'm in my final year of college (hopefully!). So I really can't promise. T_T

I think this all looks wonderful. I prefer the larger font because, um, I'm old and I can't read the smaller font as easily, but the smaller font is still perfectly readable. Great job!

I would agree with using Anime Ace as the font. Comic Sans looks a litte... weird on manga.

I think the size of the scans are great, and they are very clean.

I love that you are scanlating Saiunkoku Monogatari! Seriously, I am really grateful that you are doing this.

A good choice of manga, very clean scans, wonderful translation. Great! ^_^b
Small font looks better, I guess.

Everything looks nice, especially now that you considered smaller sized fonts. :) Good luck!
