FB 130 quick aside

melancholy

current mood: melancholy

I just finished pulling the scans Mona posted and they're lovely. At a glance, one line already has me pondering how to put the translation. Those who can read/understand Japanese, the line I'm talking about is:

結局
おまえのこと
僕よりずっと
キレイだから

The meaning is simple enough to understand. Putting it well in English... For those who can read J but aren't seeing my problem, I'm hung up on omaenokoto and kirei. We'll see how I end up putting this line.

The chapter itself though is beautiful. Was it Ale-chan? who mentioned in the FGML that there was a note on the front of the magazine that FB has finally reached it's climax? I'd been wondering about that since Elina in Rosetta mentioned it as well. From the end banner, FB will continue beyond the next chapter as there's no comment about the next chapter being the final one. How much further though is unknown. Unfortunately Hakusensha hasn't updated yet for the latest manga (not surprising since it's not street date yet in Japan). Anyhow, let's see how far I get for the time being. ^_^

umm i can ask Ale about it ^_^
but isn't kirei supposed to mean beautiful?
omae no koto is used so much in manga and it still doesn't stick with me
omae =you/r koto=thing
your thing? bah i'm no help (should shut up hehe)

^_^; It's the dual meaning problem. To put it simply it says "after all, (about you) is much cleaner/more beautiful than me". Akito's talking about Tohru's person / personality and not physical beauty. This line ties in with when Tohru admits to being filthy in trying to break the curse. Was it back in the chapter about sophistry? I can't quite recall exactly.

aaaaaaah *nods*
umm... i don't quite recall the chapter but yeah it does come full circle to what tohru was implying back than ^__^
yeah it sucks when your happiness depends on someone else's demise or unhappiness/loss of everything though I think for akito no matter how much it hurts now...it is in her best interest to start anew :)

two halves

This isn't something I've been posting but in the entire "love" section that I last did with my "Expressive Japanese" entries, Maynard translates it as "the things about you". Like, you don't grammatically love the actual person but the "things about them" are what you dwell on, think about, admire, love.

I keep meaning to ask you where that's been coming from (i.e. what book). I've learned a phrase or three from your posts. ^_^

Rin in purple (tol_acharne)

*tackles* Advance adoration! *^^*

*cries* I keep trying to convince myself I can read the dialogue on Haru and Rin's scene, because I can sound it all out. But I have NO idea, really.

^_^ The top line is continued from Kagura's scene so I skipped it. The bulk of Haru/Rin's is

H: This is, in this way, quite sad/lonely.

Please, cry with me.

Rin forgiveness (lune_de_papel)

;_; It's sort of heart-stabbing, but at the same time I'm glad it's acknowledged (esp. since--at least from a fic perspective--I tend to be of the opinion that, for them, sharing the bond was something like what it was originally meant to be).

More than just one chapter left?! It's Christmas! It's better than Christmas, since my Visa's not whimpering in pain. ^_^

Good luck with the translation. (Is around, if you like.)

Furuba : smiling Akito

hey *waves*
Alechan here^^ Mona directed me to your entry.
well, Akito is definitely referring to the beauty that Tooru has inside, it means more than beautiful, that she is a good person at heart...
For me the problem is that I don't know english well so my translation would be imprecise..but would sound like
"in the end you are way more beautiful than me" but to put that"beautiful" in english for me it's difficult since my vocabulary is not so big..beautiful is also written in katakana that means it doesn't have the conventional meaning here.
Sice it means also "clean" I would stick with that.
Also seeing that later Tooru compares herself to Akito saying that Akito is more "genuine" than her since she doesn't hide her feelings, at least this is what I got so.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to help you more ;_;
And yeah, there is a little circle on Hana to yume cover that says "クライマックス間近"
So yeah...in my opinion it won't end on next chapter...but if I got it well it will be on the cover of next issue..
that's all I know^^

English - MacNicoll quote (maker unknown

That is tough. Especially working with a fragment like this. There is the expression "inner beauty", but right now, I can't think of a way to make that a comparison. (Because "your inner beauty is greater than mine" is feeble and bad!)

Oh. Maybe "You're a more beautiful person than I am." It still falls short, but the distance is bridged a little. ^_^

Hi there! ^^;; The biggest problem with the line isn't so much the meaning, so much as how to convey it such that it's neither bulky nor carries the wrong "feel". ^^;; I don't like "clean" because it has the wrong "feel", but in terms of what's being said, it ties back to Tohru's "I'm filthy" dialogue earlier in the series much better. I'm leaning towards something like "everything about you is much cleaner/more beautiful/purer than myself" in terms of structure except that "everything" isn't in the line. However, without it, the first concept to come to mind would then turn to physical beauty which isn't what I want. (Does that make sense?)

And yeah, there is a little circle on Hana to yume cover that says "クライマックス間近"
Interesting. Thank you for that. At a guess, we might have a few more chapters then. ^_^

What do the words in the little cirlce mean? And what's the end banner say?

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: July 19th, 2006 03:37 am (UTC)

The circle would mean something like "Climax is near."

And the banner says something like:

The 12shi's long, long banquet has ended... Now, for the first time, with a lot of uncertainty, and a little bit of hope, they have their "freedom"...

Ale, how would you describe it in italian?

Posted by: 美夢 (_miyuchan_)

Furuba Akito 1

I would use the world "limpida" in italian because it has the meaning of "pure" "clean" and beautiful, you use it to describe someone who is very sincere with her feelings and don't hide them...

Completely unrelated to FB...

I forgot to ask you last night, but was wondering if you've read / are planning on reading Saiunkoku Monogatari novels? I'm currently re-reading book 4 and a couple of things have me intrigued as to whether I'm reading it right, or if I'm reading too much into things. ^^;

Saiunkoku

I was planning to read it...but..buuuut I find it quite difficult to follow that serie for all the connection to chinese culture that I can't grasp.
I might try while I'm here in japan tho..I like that serie a lot.
I have a friend who is reading the novels..if you want some confirmations or explanation I can ask her, her japanese is really really good (she has JLPT level 1) I'm sure she can be useful.

Re: Completely unrelated to FB...

>_<;; Believe me when I say, I know the feeling. I sometimes skip those parts that get too much into government structure etc., until I feel more able to tackle fighting through the stuff. ^^;; I hope you'll give it a try though. It's a great series and the story is very rich. ^___^

I have a friend who is reading the novels..if you want some confirmations or explanation I can ask her, her japanese is really really good (she has JLPT level 1) I'm sure she can be useful.

Want! ^___^ If you're able, and she's willing to answer, there're two points in book one and two points so far in book 4 that I want to double check and get someone's opinion on. One of those in book 4 I was reading through last night, the other, I haven't hit again yet, but has bothered me since I first read it.

*****
- Book 1, p159-160 Ryuuki's line to Shuuei and Kouyuu

This line gives me the serious heeb-jeebs. The way I've been reading it, Ryuuki starts off talking about Seiran and switches to talking about Kouyuu and Shuuei in the middle, but maybe I'm reading it wrong, and he's talking about the two of them since the start? Or is he only talking about Seiran?? (That doesn't make sense from the fourth sentence though).

Book 1 last page, last line. I'm not sure how to take those names. Are we talking children??

- Book 4, end p60-61, Ryuuki says he wants to ask Shou Taishi a question and Shou Taishi answers before Ryuuki even asks his question. No one is mentioned, but I'm wondering if they're talking about Shouka?

- p141-2 regarding Meishou and Seiran. Did Meishou do to Seiran what I'm thinking he did, from the phrase 「あんなにかわいがってやったのに」, or do I need to wash my brain?? This one's been sitting at the back of my mind bothering me since I first read it.
*****

I might have more questions as I continue reading the series again though (assuming your friend is willing to try answering my questions). ^^;; I think book 4~ is where I seriously started skipping parts as I read, so I still need to go back and fill in those bits in my mind. Thank you so much, and I really hope you'll try fighting through the novels. It's really, really a wonderful series. ^___^

Re: Completely unrelated to FB...
Saiunkoku

I'll direct her here^^
she has a lj too, she might be not the best in english (she's learning it like me) but she knows japanese very well, I'm sure that if she is at that point of the novels she will answer you^^

Btw she said also that she really doesn't like the anime..but I too have read around that novels fans of saiunkoku called the anime "sai-unko-ku" (you understand the meaning..)
That's something that made me really want to read the novels..
Is it really so different??

Re: Completely unrelated to FB...

Thank you! ^___^

ROFLMAO! Oh... my... I've seen some positive comments as well as some critical comments about the anime, but I have to admit, I haven't run across that nickname for it! ^^;;

......If I had to do a comparison, I'd probably equate it to something like FB anime vs manga. There are some good things, there are some horrible things, some things/people have been changed... and the novels are just so much richer, more developed, and very endearing. If you have the second CD Drama (Ougon no Yakusoku), it'll give you an idea of how different the anime is from the novels. That drama followed the novel much more closely and Kijin in there is so much better. Let me know if you don't have it and are interested in listening to it, I can either UL it or send it to you. (Might have to break it up a bit, it's a 2 disk drama). ^_^

Re: Completely unrelated to FB...

Hajimemashite XD ^_^
Ale direct me here ... about saiunkoku novel ne?

Actually I'm only read saiunkoku 1-3 & gaidens full, then I skipped vol 4-5 (didn't buy it) then read 6-8 with skipped parts ... XD
It's because I'm big fans of Ryuki-Shuurei (and members in the castle), so the story about Shuurei and Eigetsu in Sa-shuukoku didn't make me interested to read.
Maybe I'll read later after my reports at university finnish...

So, I can't help you lots for volume 4 and 5...

But I can help you for the 1st one XD
Ryuki told about Shuuei-Kouyu from beginning. Shuuei asked about why Ryuki didn't give flower to Seiran. Ryuki said he didn't need to give Seiran flower, because he `know` that Seiran will always support him ... like Shuuei and Kouyu, whom take the flower which send by Ryuki.
Shuuei said if Ryuki give them big estimate, then Ryuki switches the topic to personality of Shuuei-Kouyu.
So, he said about Shuuei-Kouyu from beginning of that sentences.
I think you are confusing about when Shuuei asked about big estimate -- it can be seem that Shuuei told about Seiran, but it's about himself and Kouyu...

The last line means:
`The legendary woman, whose called as one of 4 name: "There is Ran-shi in the military, and Ri-Kou in litelature"'

So, this means about future seeing of Ryuki's goverment.
Ran-Shi is family name of Shuuei-Seiran, and Ri-Kou is family name of Kouyu-Shuurei.
Shuurei is only woman in 4 big person who helped Ryuki's goverment.
That's why she called as legendary woman.

Personally I don't like this kind of story teller. It's really BIG SPOILER ... so we already know that Shuurei will passed the Koku-shi and helped Ryuki as Kanshi from book 1.
And that's mean she could be not married with Ryuki -- if we think that she will become legendary as Kanshi --.
Even it is just one of a possibility, this enough to make me really lazy to read the next story ... and take time lots to read other books ...

Book 4

pg60-61
I can't help for this ... but maybe yes?

pg 141-2
Meishou is new leader of Satsujin-zoku, right? But he was vice-leader of that group when Seiran and Ensei fight with them.
Maybe Seiran had fight with Meishou at that time but he got hurt/wound?
`Kawaigaru` can be mean what you thought too XDD and can also mean make someone hurt and feel pain.
I think maybe Seiran lost again him at that time -- and that's why Meishou said kawaigaru to him...

Sorry if my English make you confusing... ;;;
And gomen I can't help some of your question clearly ^^;;
Hope this answer helped you XD

Hajimemashite! Yoroshiku ne!

Actually I'm only read saiunkoku 1-3 & gaidens full, then I skipped vol 4-5 (didn't buy it) then read 6-8 with skipped parts ... XD

*laughs* I know the feeling. I did much the same and skipped a lot of the bits about Eigetsu and Sa Province (although I didn't skip vol 4. Vol 5...). ^^;

I think I forgave the author the last page in book 1 after I read the afterward in book 2. She mentioned something about the story really ending there and not expecting to continue it, so I can see doing something like that in that case. But it certainly does make things much more difficult in terms of Ryuuki and Shuurei being together in the end. ^^;

Meishou is new leader of Satsujin-zoku, right? But he was vice-leader of that group when Seiran and Ensei fight with them.
Maybe Seiran had fight with Meishou at that time but he got hurt/wound?

Yeah, that's him. I don't remember anything being mentioned about the two having fought, but I haven't finished re-reading to that point yet so I might've missed it before. Certainly, Meishou's reaction later on makes it a distinct possibility. ^_^

Would you be willing to answer some more questions about the series later on? (I'm sure I'll have questions over time, but...) I definitely understand if you don't want to. ^^;

Thanks very much for clarifying those points for me. I really appreciate it! ^___^

I couldn't agree more with you that the chapter was phenominal. I got chills the whole time while reading it, and was practically cheering by the end.

I think the climax has passed; this was part of the resolution. (Dorky English teacher-to-be)...
