Stuff on Saiunkoku Characters

May 31st, 2006 (11:40 am)

Comments and stuff on the characters:

Shuurei's description of Ryuuren to her father:

It's like he's 52 degrees off normal. At least if he were 45, 90 or 180 degrees off base, you can make allowances for it and figure out how to deal with him, but since he's off by such a strange degree, you can't really understand him.

Seiran's reason as he told Shuuei while he wasn't staying in the Uringun:

If I were in the Uringun, I won't be able to go home at a set time. I won't be able to have Her Lady's meals.

Ryuuki and Seiran:
Ryuuki complained about Seiran's looks being the cause of everything (his misunderstanding of who he was). Ryuuki honestly didn't think they were that different in age. Seiran admits that even he can't tell his age from his looks. Ryuuki then comments that you'd never think Seiran was older than Shuuei.

Seiran: I don't know about that. Mentally, at least, I think I'm much older than he is.

Otherwise, when Kouyuu's with Shuuei, he's definitely a lot more hot-tempered than he normally is. The same's true between Reishin and Kou Kijin, and Seiran and Ensei. I guess they're close enough that they don't have to hide things. Anime Kouyuu is a bit too emotional compared to the novels. His freezing in the tourney is an example of something that I don't think is typical for his character. He wouldn't do that sort of thing in public.

It's a good thing Ensei's so good at fighting otherwise he'd have been pincushioned eons ago by Seiran's sword and temper.

Seiran and Shuuei... Shuuei, short of pulling rank on Seiran, doesn't have a chance against him. ^^;; Seiran seems to always have the upper hand on him and cuts off any opposition before Shuuei can really protest. Ryuuki even asks Seiran not to tease Shuuei so much at one point. ^^; Of course, Seiran doesn't let Shuuei get remotely close to Shuurei telling him that if he wants to approach her in that manner, he has to clean up his womanizing ways first. (Mind you, Ryuuren takes a similar attitude towards Shuuei) ^^;

Shoot. I don't know if we'll get that story or not?? It's part of when Ryuuren is staying at Shuuei's home and considers Shuurei and Eigetsu as his friends. Shuurei and Eigetsu ask Ryuuren to come for dinner and so Ryuuren hits all the gambling spots to earn money to buy some stuffs to take for dinner. While at it, he runs into someone who drops a mask. Ryuuren immediately recognizes the face on the mask as Shouka's and can only assume that the person who'd had it was up to no good. He then leaves his winnings with that person (sic he throws it at him) and runs off with the mask. ^^;

Wow, what a jumbled mess. ^^;

Of course, Seiran doesn't let Shuuei get remotely close to Shuurei telling him that if he wants to approach her in that manner, he has to clean up his womanizing ways first.

Which I don't think would be a hard thing to do, if he wants to court Shuurei. *laughs* (I have, like, this insanely big bias for Shuurei, for some curious reason.) Aside from Shuuei/Kouyuu, I want to see how this pairing turns out to be (including Seiran/Shuurei, Ryuuki/Shuurei, heck, why not everybody/Shuurei. D:)

It's a good thing Ensei's so good at fighting otherwise he'd have been pincushioned eons ago by Seiran's sword and temper.

Amen! :D

*laughs* True although it's pretty funny to see everyone be so protective of her whether he's actually interested or not. :P

hehe yeah *hopefully a proper kiss this time hehe*

*poke* you didn't tell me what that seiran/shuurei love moment was about (from volume 3)!

Posted at: June 1st, 2006 05:19 am (UTC)

*laughs* It's a very brief moment in volume 3. Since the 3 top applicants for the National Exams ended up being Eigetsu (13), Ryuuren (disappeared after marks were revealed), and Shuurei (female), there was a month's(?) grace period for people to see how the new people were and to give them some light duties before they're sent to their actual assignments. However, since Shuurei and Eigetsu arrived in quite the state for the first day, Shuurei has been assigned to cleaning the toilets and Eigetsu to polishing shoes during mornings, and other officials then give them a bunch of calculations and other paperwork to take care of on top of other homework in the afternoons / evenings to the point that they can barely finish their work in the course of a day.

On one day, Eigetsu and Shuurei are in a state of exhaustion but they finish their work and Shuurei tells Eigetsu she'll deliver the papers to the individual departments and that he should get some sleep (it's early morning by the time they finished). However, as she goes to deliver the papers, she's attacked some officials from the Protocol Dept. who throw mud balls at her. Lucky for her, Kouyuu "happens" to come along and gets hit by a mud ball, but at least with his arrival the attack ends. Seeing the mess, the Assistant Secretary orders her to clean the hall.

Kouyuu and everyone else leaves and after fighting back tears, when she looks up, Seiran is there. However, Shuurei asks him to leave right away because he's always so sweet on her. Shuurei tells him that despite all the hardships she's going through right now (bullying, insults etc.) that she's still very happy because she chose her path and it's part of the process of going where she wants to go. And while she'd often complained to him and cried on his shoulder in the past, she couldn't do that this time.

Seiran extends his hand to touch her cheek, but she stops him and closes her eyes and asks him to leave while her eyes are closed. She then tells him that she's feeling pretty shaky at the moment and that she's likely to forget everything she'd just said and cry and complain to him if he didn't because he makes it so easy for her to cry.

Seiran withdraws his hand and sighs. He then tells her that if she feels that she can't take anymore, that she should come to him. Not for her sake, but for his.

Hmpf. *smug*

omg these are great tidbits. heh.

seiran *giggles* RABU him. ryuuki....RABU too. ^^

so, ithought in the novel Seiran DOES state that he is 21. . .so, then Shuuei is that age too? hmmm...

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: June 1st, 2006 04:25 am (UTC)

...Seiran's self-proclaimed to be 21, but he's not. Since he claims to be 21 and he doesn't seem to be too far off his age, nobody questioned it or thought to connect him with Prince Seien because of the age difference, but he's actually older than Shuuei. IIRC, Shuuei is 24, Kouyuu around 22(?) and Seiran's 26. ^^;

My! Falling in love with a girl ten years younger than he is? How, how intriguing... *pokes Seiran with a stick*

*laughs* Naughty boy isn't he? ^^;

huh...so is the anime wrong? doesn't Sho Taiho equate Seiran with the lost prince, because of his sword style and also Seiran's age?
and, for Kyoyuu...did they say he was the youngest to ever pass the national exams. I thought he was 16?

sorry for all the questions. ^^;;

In the anime, no one really questioned Seiran's identity because they accepted his self-proclaimed age as true. It was another way for him to further hide who he was.

Sou Taifu (the one who sparred with Seiran) realised who he was from appearance and his fighting style. Combined with Seiran's slip of "Sou Shogun" and he knew for sure. Shuuei realised it as well from watching them fight but waited for Seiran to "talk" to him about things.

Sa Taiho... I think he realised who Seiran was from Shou Taishi's comments and having his own people investigate. I think in the anime Shouka says that Sa went ahead with his plot thanks to Shou's subtle baiting as it were. It's Shou who seeded the idea of looking for the prince in Sa.

In the novel... there was a bit of discussion between Shou and Sa (and Sou?) about the time during the fight for the throne and how the Ran family had even tried to find Prince Seien but that, while they'd managed to track his path so far, all trace of him disappeared at a certain point.

If you look at Seiran's name, like Shou said, he's very well named. The Imperial family name is Shi - murasaki (purple). Seien IIRC, means something like pristine garden. Seiran's name is Shi - murasaki sou (purple flower) while Seiran means quiet or silent orchid.

As for Kouyuu, he was the youngest to pass the exam at the top of his year at 16. Shuuei also took the exam that same year. However, IIRC, it supposedly took 2 years after taking the exams before they became government officials and has been 4 years since that time. I don't have the book with me, but when Shuurei told Ryuuki about that time during the fight for the throne, both Kouyuu and Shuuei were listening in (as was Seiran). Those two then have a small scene where Shuuei tells Kouyuu that they couldn't have done anything at that time (civil unrest) anyways since they didn't even take the National Exams until 2 years later.

Hope that made sense. ^^;

heh-heh...i see i sent Sou Taifo. ^^;;
and, thanks for clearing that up...so, Seiran could be 24...which would actually seem a bit more credible. For, he said he was with Shuurei and her father 13yrs...and i thought, hmmm...he was exiled at 8?? seemed a little young.

and, also....what does IIRC mean. heh. ^^;;

Seiran was exiled at ~13 (Shuuei's 24, Seiran's 26). I believe he was exiled because of his mother's family's actions, not because of anything he'd done himself.

IIRC - "if I recall correctly" ^_^

Ahhh.. Isee. So he did not leave 13yrs ago. He was 13 when he left. So, then the anime was wrong when he said he had been with shuurei & shouka for 13yrs. And it was his mum's fault he left? That had to do with the warring for the throne, neh?

And thanks for clearing up the "iirc"

Actually both he was 13 at the time, and it happened 13 years ago. I don't think it wasn't his mother's fault per se, but her family's. However, that aspect was only mentioned in passing. The timing though is rather broad as Seiran spent the better part of a year in exile with Ensei before he'd been found by Shouka.

did the anime make a mistake then, calling Seiran 21? it soo fits his being that age, when i first saw him, I told Toriru he looked like he was 10yrs older than Shuurei. ^^

thanks so much for the help and info! ^^

*laughs* Not quite. Seiran lied when he said he was 21. ^^;

ahhh.....so, i assume later in the volumes he "reveals' his age. ^____^

Hi. Just wanted to let you know I've friended you. I'm a friend of toriru4ever --she's known me (online) for a couple of years now. She talked me into trying Saiunkoku Monogatari, so I'm just getting into it. :-)

Hi, just wanting to drop you a line on your wonderful Saiunkoku Monogatari transcripts! They have allowed me to enjoy this fantastic series beyond what has already been subbed, and I can't thank you enough for the time and effort that must go into transcribing and then typing up so much. I've been going to your randomfandom site for years to read your great Fruits Basket summaries/scripts, and now I have even more reason to be haunting it. :D

Thanks again for being so dedicated, and I'm certain countless others are appreciative as well. Keep up the good work! <3

I Love the Saiunkoku Monogatari Section!!!

Thanks for taking the time to do a section on the Saiunkoku Monogatari anime and novel series. I was ecstatic when I came upon your website. Since the fansubbing for this anime is coming out at a slow pace, I thought that I would try googling a site that has more information regarding the anime and the novels and the Saiunkoku Monogatari section of your site does just that. I must say that your translations/summaries for the anime and for the novels are really good.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing future updates to your site.

Wow, more great stuff! The little outtakes only books can pop in definitely add perspective to the anime. I was trying to do the math on Seiran's age throughout the anime raws, and it was weird, because the young Seien that Ryuuki remembers is definitely not 8 (if he was really 21). Seiran clearly came off as being internally mid-20s or even 30. So seeing your 26 definitely helped clear things up. :)

Ryuuren probably gets away with what he does by being knowingly eccentric. It's hard to tell when he's really taking liberties or just being himself. :)

intro, request, and thanks

I'm going to fangirl you a bit, I think--at least until I get through reading all these lovely notes on "Saiunkoku Monogatari". And then I'll head over to your site and get the Furubura stuff.

Since I'm probably going to friend you--with your permission--here's a quick intro to me: name's Andrea. Currently living in Japan (Kanto Region, hour or so north of Tokyo, out in the rice fields ^__^) and working as an ALT in two junior highs and four elementaries as well as some extra classes in the evenings. 28 this month, and imensely grateful to find an older sempai. Friend of _branch_'s and written_in_blue, which is how I both found out about KokuMono and your journal.
Any questions, feel free to ask. In the meantime, I'll be trowling back through these entries to gleam any bit of knowledge about this series that I can. Thanks for sharing these with the masses!
