2.5 more eps to go... will I make it?

May 24th, 2006 (01:20 am)
sleepy

current mood: sleepy

So, after a bit of thought on the weekend, I decided to try to get caught up anime translations first for Saiunkoku since once that's caught up I'll have it on constant once a week and can concentrate on the novels afterwards instead. >_<;; So, for the past few days, I've been listening to the anime eps and jotting things down. To the best of my knowledge ep 2 is missing a few lines where I still can't quite pick out what's being said or don't know how to word it, ep 3 is in draft form (I still need to double check I didn't gloss anything over too badly or change something too much), ep 4 is half done, I stopped for the night in the middle only to start with a different ep later, ep 5... Ryuuren... >_<;; is mostly complete I believe - I haven't checked it over yet either. (Could be worse, in the book he's a lot harder to pin down and that flute would likely have just about killed anyone watching). ^^;

Oh, and I finished reading all the books except for #5 I believe. I skimmed through it very quickly and didn't really absorb much of the story line. I know I've missed some points because there are things mentioned in the short stories that I have no idea where they came from. Likewise, I've listened to the first CD Drama now (first novel storyline) and so now the head has no clear idea of what's said where and how (anime, CD, and novel are all in a swirl).

One of the things I've noticed with the anime is that it tries to put a bit too much in sometimes from the original novel. Not that this is necessarily bad, but for people who haven't read the novel it leaves some major question marks floating over the head - at least it does for me. Likewise, some of the changes in story for the anime... *shrug* While I like the anime's feel and style, I like the novel better for storyline development.

Also, since for the anime, I don't have the written script, there's definitely a high probability I'm going to muck something up. I've noticed it with the Ayu translations where there are some mistakes based on same sound different word. Since I've now read the novels I know what meaning was intended for certain lines, but if I hadn't... Add to that some unusual words, some really strange names / titles, and general oddity, things do get strange.

In any case, at the rate I've been going, hopefully I'll finish the last 2.5 eps in time for... ep 8? >_<;; It should be fun to watch this next ep. Especially since Ro Ensei gets introduced. I'm not sure if we'll meet Kou (yellow) Kijin (eccentric person) next ep. He's in the opening credits IIRC though so definitely soon. ^___^

I don't know if you still need help with editing for this series, but after Ysa described it to me, I'm curious & willing to help. ^_^ (I'm not so good at offering structure advice/deep analysis, but for sentence work & clarity, I'm your girl.)

Wai! Thank you! *glomp* I can definitely use some editing help with the anime eps. A single ep is looking to be quite long. BTW, can you work around html? I write most of the translations direct into an html file and with the anime translations, it's probably easier to send the actual html file rather than stripping it down to the text. ^_^

Theoretically, I can work in html, yes. If there's a lot of header stuff, it would be helpful to have a comment or something searchable to let me know where the text of the translation starts, but that's all I think I'd need.

I MISSED YA!!! *ties Shadow-san up so she doesn't do several days MIA* hehe
wai! episode 7T____T!!! could you do summary/translation on that? *is my FAVORITE* hehe

I am super curious about the novels too hehe

P.S does Shuurei start to warm up to Ryuuki? she's a bit aloof towards his romantic antics ;-;

*laughs* But if you tie me up, I won't be able to type the translations. :P There are a couple of lines I haven't figured out how to word, and some of the lines are very... run on sentence-style, but I ULed what I managed so far for ep 7. ^^;

Shuurei and Ryuuki... ......If they show it, we mights have a cute Ryuuki x Shuurei moment... sort of... in ep 8. ^^;; Unfortunately, Shuurei's got issues in the area of romance. And if we get that far in the anime, events with Sakujun definitely don't help matters (vol 4/5/+). Ryuuki tries on his side in the next couple of volumes in the novels, and he makes a hint of progress, but in the grand scheme of things, I'd say not a huge amount of progress is made. (Heck, I think Ryuuren's more touchy feely with her than Ryuuki gets to be even. ^^;;) By the end of 10 volumes, there might be some movement in her heart. It's hard to say for sure, but she did promise to make him some vegetarian dishes when she got back (promise made at the end of vol 8) and she wanted to learn how to cook regional dishes in vol 10 before going back to the capital. ^^;;

If the story follows the book, the next story line will develop Seiran's character much more than Ryuuki's. And yes, Ro Ensei is the one with the cross shaped scar on his cheek. Ensei and Seiran together can be quite volatile. ^^;;

BTW, if it's the trailer image that looks like someone's about to kiss someone else... I'm not sure who they are. I'm sort of wondering if it mightn't be Kou Kijin but I didn't think we'd get his past so quickly. It seems strange for it to be Ryuuki and Shuurei what with the positioning of the characters, but he... sort of... does try. ^^;

Yeah, that's right. It's explained later in the episode, but short version is that Ryuuki has been hoping and waiting for someone else to come to take the throne and so he's only been doing the bare minimum for the country. He's been waiting for someone to demand that he have Prince Seien brought back from exile. However, if he had a child, it would complicate matters for Seien to take the throne.

but Why does Shuuei say that Ryuuki slept with many womenO___O;;;
or did i read that wrong...

Shuuei is a definite womanizer and he recognized from how Ryuuki was approaching Shuurei that Ryuuki was in fact quite experienced with seducing women. After the previous emperor died (about 1 year ago), no one really knew anything about Ryuuki since he'd been the ignored prince. Ryuuki, hoping for Seien to come back then stops seeing any women and only takes men to his bed. What with the confusion around his father's death, by the time anyone really paid any attention to him, most people think he's only attracted to men and he does nothing to suggest otherwise.

Remember, in ep 3, we learned that Ryuuki is afraid of the dark and can't sleep on his own. In the original novel, Shuurei actually leaves him in her bed and goes to the next room to sleep the third time he came for the night, and Ryuuki wakes in the middle of the night screaming. It's then that he tells her the story of his past and his fear of the dark. Essentially, Ryuuki'd slept with a different person every night because he couldn't handle being alone in the dark. After he started staying with Shuurei though, he stopped sleeping around and his bed's been empty since she left as well.

btw what's the cute moment between Ryuuki and Shuurei? incase they don't animate it
This is the dream that Ryuuki had about Shuurei. Basically he dreams of seeing her again, holds her close and whispers that he loves her. He bend down and closes his eyes to kiss her and just as their lips are about to touch...

Shuurei asks him what he's saying. Surprised he opens his eyes and finds that his arms are empty. Instead Shuurei tells him that she's decided to marry Seiran and lists Seiran's good points and how he's 100x more wonderful. She then tells him that she'll be his sister-in-law and she'll probably come by on occasion to borrow some money. ^^;;

Unfortunately, the next page is missing from the scans, but the next thing we know is that Shuuei is dying of laughter after Ryuuki, who is chilling his forehead, had told him his dream. (Kouyuu completely ignored what he'd said). Shuuei comments that the dream did have a certain element of reality though and that Shuurei was that age and that she was very popular in town. Ryuuki pales when he hears that Shuurei is so popular and tells Shuuei that he's been sending Shuurei letters and gifts. Shuuei then asks what his last gift was and apparently Ryuuki had sent her a J voodoo doll.

Apparently Shou told him that it was a popular charm on some Eastern Island and had even given him the straw to make the doll from. Ryuuki had apparently made the doll with a few of his hairs in it, then for 3 nights, in the middle of the night would dance directing his feeling at the doll and after that, had sent it to Shuurei. Supposedly, his feelings would then be conveyed to the recipient. ^^;;

OMG You don't know how much that made me laugh!! omg that's hilarious ! My Poor Ryuuki! to believe anything that ebil advisor of his would say is just hysterical! I guess Ryuuki was kinda desperate after that nightmare he had!! ^__^

one more question...please tell me Ryuuki wasn't actually screwing all those people he shared his bed with hehe

My Poor Ryuuki! to believe anything that ebil advisor of his would say is just hysterical!

*laughs* This is a common little theme that runs throughout the books. ^^;; I love how in one scene, Shuurei's about to head back to Sa Province and if she fails in her mission, she wouldn't be coming back at all. So Ryuuki tells her something along the lines of:

"If you don't come back, I'll be a window* for the rest of my life."

"A window?"

"Shou Taishi told me that in the common tongue it means to be single."

"Don't you mean a widower? What are you going to do if you became a window?"

Not to mention that a widower didn't mean being single but was when one lost their marriage partner.

'Shou Taishi's told another strange lie...'

*In the original he says yamori = a gecko.

one more question...please tell me Ryuuki wasn't actually screwing all those people he shared his bed with hehe

The implication is there from what I read in vol 1, but it's not out and out stated. I think the second night that Ryuuki went to stay with Shuurei, a bright red Kourin asked him if he wanted her to bring his usual night-time meal, and after a glance at Shuurei, he said no. Shuurei, surprised that he'd eat something after the evening meal tells him that he'll get fat eating so much. But Ryuuki then explains that the night-time meal was a euphemism for an aphrodisiac and while he didn't care for it, his partner did.

I still have to double check but I was under the impression Ryuuki didn't take the same person to his bed to avoid any favouritism or expectations from the partners but I could be wrong. *unsure*

Eeek! Nope. ^^; To the best of my knowledge he hasn't tried anything with Kourin but I got the feeling that she did bring him food or drink if he so desired to his rooms. She clearly knows what it was for though. ^^;;

neee shadow do you mind advertisement for your site? there are quite a few desperate saiunkoku fans out there looking for info on novel and summaries :)

I don't mind. I assume you mean in the LJ community? I haven't advertised yet since it's still quite the mess. ^^;; But yeah, feel free to advertise it if you like. ^_^

Good day! My heart is really bursting of happiness to have found you and the links to translated parts of the novel! Thank you very much! I'm crying of happiness! But may I know if these very intriguing parts about Ryuuki's past bad boy habits (hehe) were translated? I'm not sure if I just missed them out... but I really think I haven't read them in the links you've given... I'm really sorry! I just want to read these parts as well...

*stumbles in from your site* I'd just like to say, that what you're doing with Saiunkoku is wonderful. ♥ I appreciate how you've taken your time to translate the novel, as well as the details on the character profiles! :)

Especially the general idea of eps 7, as I'm a closet Shuuei/Kouyuu shipper at heart. *laughs*

This post might help you with finding the various posts. A number of the translation snippets I did for Saiunkoku were done in various comments, so it's really more of a matter of working through the various posts of that time. ^^;
