current mood: getting there

Since I seem to be pretty caught up in the series, I've started working on a new section for the site. >_<;; It's pretty sparse at the moment, and it's not officially open yet (no links to the pages yet), but if you're interested and you like the series Saiunkoku Monogatari, you're welcome to take a look and tell me what you think. I'm not planning on translating all the novels and will likely switch to a more summary style, but there's a lot of litte bits and scenes in the novels I've read that deserve more than a glossing over or sparse mention. :? Shall see how I decide to go with those.

So far, I've almost finished the first episode translation (I'm not sure how to translate Li Kouyuu's rank, position and responsibilities. He's second in rank of one of the six departments (Ribu - jirou) of one of the four ministries (shoushoshou). I'm not familiar with the political structure of Ancient China. ^^;; ), done the prologue to the first novel, translated about 1/4 of the first part of the first novel, and written up a bit on some of the characters.

Anyhow, if you're interested, do have a look-see. ^_^

Also, anyone willing to edit the novel translations? Going from Japanese fiction writing style to English is proving a bit much for me when translating on the fly.

I'm done with my night classes this wednesday, so any way I can help out I would be more than glad to!

Yay! Thank you! ^_^ I'll give you a few days first to recover though. :P It sounded like you had quite a bit of writing to take care of with your classes.

I should be fine by this weekend, so you can send it my way then. I generally like being busy with things I enjoy (i.e. anything that isn't my classes!) This sounds like it will be fun in its own way ^__^

Sounds good! ^_^ I'll see how far I can get with things and will try to break the parts into reasonable chunks. Thanks muchly! ^_^

I can help you!

Hi!

I can help you, if you´d like, too, because I felt in love after I´ve seen the anime and read the first volume (some site translated the first volume), and I´m really into it because of your post! :)

Love,

Cris

Re: I can help you!

Thanks! ^_^ I was wondering if I could get you to work on the first anime episode translation once I finish changing a couple of things actually (esp. where Shouka works). I'd like to have some content in "nice" form before opening the section up and all the links are now set up and in place I think (just not ULed yet). I'll post a note when I fix those wordings. ^_^

Re: I can help you!

I'm not sure how you want to do this. Could you let me know your e-mail addy?

Mine's: tsujirimaccha @ yahoo . ca

The pre-edit version has been ULed to the site at:

http://shadow.randomfandom.com/saiunkoku/saiun_01.htm

if you're willing to work from an online version. Mostly, I've been working with the html at the same time as writing down the translations so... *shrug* I can also strip the html and boot you a straight text version. ^_^

Some things to keep track of would be:
- 4 ministries, 6 departments, not the other way
- head of the department = Senior Secretary; second = Vice Sec.
- archives not treasury for where Shouka works. (decided to go with the more precise place)

Cheers! ^_^

*also likes editing* ^^

That reminds me that I downloaded ep. 2 yesterday!

Wai! *glomp* I'll definitely take advantage of that. ^^; The novel translation isn't looking very pretty at the moment (actually it's looking down right scary) because of the difference in writing styles between the two languages. >_<;; I'm currently trying to write up translations for part 1 and 3 to the novel (3 is in horrific condition at the moment) and would like to get up to part 1 finished before opening that section up openly. Here again, as soon as I've checked over Shouka's job and work place, if you could take care of editing the Prologue, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm not sure how to break up editing for the actual novel parts as yet, but I'm thinking of maybe trying editing team style for the novels and possibly the same for the anime eps. The novel parts can be quite long and I think it would be a lot of work for one person to do one part. :?

More later for the novels. ^_^

geek girl (enriana

Sure, just send me the text and give me a fairly detailed idea of what you'd like done to it (smoothing, rewriting, proofreading, whatever), and I'll see what I can do. *^^* What kind of schedule are you aiming for?

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: May 17th, 2006 09:28 pm (UTC)

Most likely I'll be sending you some stuff late tonight / tomorrow. Initially I'm aiming for ASAP so the area can open with some material (anime ep 1, prologue and part 1), but after that... I'm not too sure. I'm thinking about trying to send chapter sections as they get done, so maybe around a chapter/week would be where it settles in. Unfortunately, the books aren't clearly separated into numbered chapters though so I think the site updates will be in book parts. The working unit will be in chapters. (hope that made sense) ^^;

Haru red outline (never_minding)

That makes sense. ^^ Do the chapters (such as they are) seem to have a typical length?

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: May 18th, 2006 09:21 pm (UTC)

Unfortunately, they seem to be pretty variable. The average is probably ~ 6-8 pages, but there are some that are 2 pages and others at 16. O_O Some chapters seem to be further divided into sections when they get longer. Anyhow, first bit booted to you. ^_^ Thank you! *hugs*

*laughs* That's okay. A friend once told me she went into science (bio) to *avoid* English not realising that you had to write well to write papers. :P

I'll be posting a link there once things are tidied up a bit more. ^_^ Believe me when I say that parts of that section are downright horrifying. ^^;;

btw Shadow-san did i tell you i LUV U!!! *glomp*
wai! I'm such a biased Ryuki x Shurei fangirl so anything concerning them is appreciated. Umm the fansubbers for ayu and we suck seem to be have some knowledge about the chinese government structure so you might wanna take a look at their fansub translations for help if you need it ^^

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: May 16th, 2006 04:21 pm (UTC)

^^;; I actually deleted the Ayu version of ep 1 shortly after DLing the We Suck version because there are a number of errors in the translation so I'm not entirely sure what they said about the government structure. As it is, I've already done some hunting and... yeah. It's not so nice as to match neatly. *sigh* Chinese government was split into 3 departments with 6 ministries whereas the J words put it into 3 (4 for the actual story) ministries with 6 departments. And of course the titles for the people in positions of power just couldn't be consistent... >_<; *grumble* :P

Anyhow, just thought you might like to know that I'm slowly picking my way through part 3 of the novel for all that it's in shocking disarray and in pieces (literally). Hopefully it'll look good once it's been pulled together and gone through editing. ^^;

So... I see that you are a convert. I suppose it's about time that I jump on the bandwagon too. I miss you! *squishes* I hope that you are doing well, hon. Oh! And I was an English major. A big part of my job at work is editing. If you ever need any help, please feel free to contact me. I know that you have a lot of offers... but anytime. K?

"A convert"...... ohhhhh yeah, I guess you could say that. ^^;; *hugs* Hope you're doing well. I've been vanishing off and on getting lost in the novels (haven't read too much beyond #4 since I really want to read #3 before moving on really) and working on scribbling down bits and pieces of translations.

Yay! Thank you so much for offering to help! *glomp* We'll see how things go, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done especially with the novels so I might be knocking on your door asking for help. ^_^ I'm thinking about seeing if it can be team edited since it really is too much for one person IMO.

Team editing sounds like a lot of fun. You are such a crisp writer that I'm sure working for you will be a breeze. hehe. Anyhow, I haven't really been around. Work has been hectic and I've been having a lot of computer problems. But, I'm doing well. How is the knitting/crocheting going? ^____^

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: May 17th, 2006 09:34 pm (UTC)

Well, knitting was going reasonably well until I discovered that the part I knit last week was too loose. >_<;; I was afraid that was the case, so I'll probably tear the whole thing out (collar section) and redo it once the heat dies down. It was for the Spice Caravan Robe but it's being done in wool and in this heat... Right now, we're getting upper 20's for weather. *melts* ~_~;

Did you say Upper 20's. O_O You pooooor thing.

Gosh... knitting is so much more difficult for me to pick up in the summer. =/ I would rather be outside. Anyhow, I can't wait to see more pictures. ^___^

I TOTALLY am grateful for you doing all this! ^____^
i only wish my japanese was better. ^^;; hopefully soon. ^^

p.s. mona is a big RyuukiXshuurei fan. I am tied, though, i DEFINITELY lean more to ShuueriXseiran..only because of their long history together. and he has better hair. HEHHEH
