Still reading GH rewrite Vol 1, and I have to admit that while it is the same story, there's definite additions so far to the story. How much of this will continue in the subsequent vols though is a bit questionable since so much is showing up here. ^^; (I'm still only on pg 137 out of 362.) So far, other than the ghost stories mentioned by Mai et al., changes to the story include Bou-san doesn't call Ayako by name when he kicks down the door in the old school house, Ayako's explanation of what happened and how she ended up locked in the room, explanation about the difference between a 'chirei' and 'jibakurei' sic earth elemental vs human spirit tied to a place, explanation of diffs between a 'ghost' and a 'spirit', glossing over of the various accidents that supposedly happened in the old school building (no showing of the actual file), removal of Kuroda claiming to having had her hair pulled and being strangled by a ghost, Kuroda claiming that there was a girl's ghost in the base and her also claiming that the sounds they heard were 'rap sounds' before leaving Mai alone in there (before Naru returns), and Naru explaining about the term 'rap sounds' and how it came to be called such in Japanese afterwards when he finally arrived at the old school house. Lots of little bits and pieces here and there that were mostly added in to the story. I guess that would also explain why the rewrite is >100 pgs longer than the original. ^^;;

BTW, out of curiosity, has anyone written to Del Rey and asked if they were going to try to license the light novels? Just curious.

Otherwise, on the anime front, I've been watching Gosick and think I'll follow this series this season. I don't know how the English version is, but I've started peeking at the light novel for this series. Hopefully I'll be able to actually sit down with it one day and just read them. :P

Del Rey is kaput, Kodansha USA took over most of their licenses, but they haven't mentioned any of the novels, so chances are probably not good. :[

Del Rey isn't kaput. It's still a powerful publishing house specializing in science fiction & fantasy novels. However, with the exception of a few remaining titles like xxxHolic, it's left the manga business. I agree that the odds of Del Rey publishing the GH novels are slim to none.

Right now, instead of the novels, I'm more curious as to who will publish volume 12 of the English GH manga. Del Rey or Kodansha USA. In fact, I'm a little worried that GH v12 may not be published at all because of the changeover.

I obviously meant as a manga (and light novel) publisher. Chances of them publishing any more light novels are very limited, they had stopped publishing many at all before they let Kodansha take their licenses over anyway.

I'll actually be surprised if anyone publishes the 12th volume of the manga. I don't actually follow it, but from what I've heard from others Del Rey put "last volume" or something similar on the back cover of volume 11. Kondansha USA may take a chance on it, since it's only 1 volume, but compared to their other titles, I'm not sure how well it did for them, so who knows if they'll publish it or not.

I wasn't sure, so I thought I'd clarify things.

I've read other people say that too. It wasn't how I remembered the back, but then I didn't read it all that closely. So I grabbed my copy and checked. Here's the back cover text.

The Last Hunt
The intrepid ghost hunters of Shibuy6a Psychic Research are in the middle of their most challenging case yet: an abandoned school that may be haunted by ravenous spirits of the dead. Can Mai, Naru, and the gang solve the case before the wicked spirits strike again -- and silence them forever?

Includes special extras after the story!

I think fandom's confusion about "last volume" comes from the "last hunt" phrase. This is the last hunt, but that doesn't necessarily mean this is the last volume. Of course, you're absolutely right that this doesn't mean the next volume will be published in the US. (Even though the last page of volume 11 makes it obvious that there's another volume to come.) Of all the titles that Del Rey manga published than I'm reading, GH is the one I'm most concerned about not getting published ever again.

hmmm...that is a kind of confusing phrase. I certainly see how people got "last volume" but it could definitely be played as "part 1 of the last hunt." Though like I said, I don't follow the series in the US, it would be nice of Kodansha to publish the LAST volume for people who do follow it. I know I would certainly be frustrated if it were something I were following. I honestly didn't pick up a few of Del Rey's recent releases until I found out if Kodansha would be continuing them and I can't imagine not being able to finish a series because they wouldn't publish the singular final volume. :[

I know that frustration all too well. Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 series I loved that died with just one volume left. Two from CMX & one from Tokyopop. If I have to add GH to that list, I will be one very unhappy camper.

smartness

I don't remember why, but I didn't finish the Gosick novel. I think it was for plot reasons, as I usually grit my teeth and endure shoddy novel translations--TP has my expectations on that front set so low. :(

Hmm... I'll have to keep that in mind, but hopefully it won't be too bad. (I don't expect miracles when it comes to light novels.)

The few light novels that have been translated into English have not typically had very good sales. Also, the domestic YA market is already oversaturated. So I'd be surprised if the novels will be translated.

Naru M11

Thanks for the update. Makes me wish even more so that I could read it. And all the next volume revisions to come. "Dream on" for English release sadly I think (by any publisher).
