Little things

October 23rd, 2008 (03:25 am)

As above. :P

There's now less than 10 days until the start of NaNo! For those who are going for it this year, are you ready? Are you going to try it on a wing and a prayer or is your outline mostly in place? :P I'm not sure which way things'll go. The Sleeping Beauty influenced concept is speaking a bit louder than the original plan for mine as it can really set the stage for Yuujou. ^^; Shall see how things go, but yes, it'll still be in Japanese. That much I'm not giving up on. :P FSU has been warned that I will indeed be stealing Ma-Ken as I've since discovered the Linux J-input isn't as robust as what I'm used to working with. (Actually, I haven't tried it out that heavily, but the main thing I've run into already that has spooked me off of using Haku is that I can't write Masako's name in one go with Haku. I have to write it as ma (chara input) sa (chara input) ko (chara input). With Windows, I can just type in masako (name input) which is much easier.) I will admit though, the Linux input system keeps me on my toes more and makes sure I'm watching what I write more carefully. ^^;

And there's just a bit over a month until JLPT. (Ginny, I'll be in T.O. from Dec. 5-9. Not very long at all. >.>) Anyone in Toronto familiar with Japantown? If it's worthwhile, I'm thinking about hitting the bookstore there. ^^;; As it is, I wonder how badly I'm going to fail this year. I haven't been studying virtually at all and the couple times I've opened the kanji workbook has told me just how much I rely on context to read. >.> I think getting badly swatted this year might be good for me though. ^^;; It might make me sit down seriously with the books and maybe also start reading things like the Yomiuri or Mainichi. I do need to start reading the paper especially for business and econ. *sigh* (Both areas I have very little interest in in real life. >.> )

As it is, I have a number of JLPT 1~2 study books as well as some JLPT1 books but have no idea anymore where to concentrate. >.> I mostly only used the JLPT2 books last year since that's what I was taking, but... There seems to be a fair jump from JLPT2 to JLPT1... or at least there does in terms of passing. I think if it weren't for the increase in passing grade as well as the added material, I wouldn't be quite so concerned, but... yeah. I'm doomed. ^^;

Otherwise, male parental's refund did indeed come through for the weirdness with the computer, and the two USB keys (4 GB) that were bought at the same time (they were on sale for $10 ea) also ended up being refunded, possibly to make up for the long delay in getting everything cleared up? In any case, since that's all done with, I guess it'll be time to start hunting for another 17" for him again. >.>

Hmmm... I happened to glance back at Jan's post for my geeky New Year resolutions:

- finish off my NaNo novel and its spinoffs
- write at least 2 more GH fanfics
- aim to participate in GH Online 2 (Sept-Oct 2008)
- finish NaNo again this year (in Japanese in prep for)
- taking JLPT1 (ha!)

What have I managed? I might've managed the second, and that's about it so far? (Have I even managed that much? Valentine's and the topic stories. Those count, right...?) I will do the last one. At least I was smart and only said to take it, not pass it. ^^; GH Online2 I chickened out of, and still haven't finished posting what I wrote for it. ^^; #4... time will tell. ^^;; As for #1... if people seriously get on my case after JLPT, I might be able to do something for it. Probably not both, but maybe one.

And... I've been toying a touch with subbing again, but am not sure if it'll amount to anything. The newest version of the subtitling program is giving some grief and is making for very slow going. I must be missing some basic setting areas. >.>

Otherwise... I think we've reached ep 3 for most of the new series we started watching. So far... Skip Beat I'll continue until ep 5 whereupon I'll either run screaming or will actually get into the story. FSU hasn't gone near the thing since the first few moments of ep 1. ^^; Mouryou no Haku is seriously starting to annoy me. In some ways the story is interesting but those girls... I'm seriously suppressing the gag reflex at times, so I'm going to drop it. FSU might continue it though. Index... is very slow going, and I can't remember if I bothered watching ep 3 or not. I think I did, but... I'll pass on it. ^^; Vampire Knight Guilty--having fun with this. Definitely will continue watching it. Vol 8 and vol 9 of the manga are coming out this and next month as will a second novel and... a fan book as well? (I think so anyway). Will have to watch for those. Unfortunately, manga 9 and the fan book aren't listed on Amazon yet. Shikabane Hime and Yozakura both don't grab me by the throat saying "watch me!", but they're interesting in their own sense. Probably will continue watching them until I get too bored or uninterested with them. Kuroshitsuji is another that I'm still watching. The scanlated manga has me half interested and half turned off, but so far I'm liking the anime. ^^; Shall have to remember to pick up the original manga from Amazon and see if that changes my opinion of it. ^_^ And my guilty pleasure this time around has got to be Hakushaku to Yousei. *laughs* I seriously need to look at getting the novels for this one. Last episode had me choking in disbelief. I can't believe Edgar said that! First episode was so cliche it was sort of funny. Ep 2 went rather corny, and ep 3 has taken the comedy even further still! Ah, it does make me laugh! But there's also enough story in it to keep me interested and want to keep watching. I suspect FSU is staying well away out of fear of what it'll do to her brain. ^^;;

In any case, my main series this time are Hakushaku to Yousei, Vampire Knight Guilty, and maybe Kuroshitsuji, semi-interesteds are Shikabane Hime and Yozakura, and uncertain is Skip Beat. Not bad over all. ginny_t, if you're reading this, have you tried watching Hakushaku at all? ^^;;

Wow. That's a lot of cuts! ^^; I suspect this post isn't overly intelligible. ^^; Ah well, it's late. ^^;

*petpet* There, there.

^^;; Considering how I seem to be planning more on failing this year, I might well be back again next year. Either that, or maybe we can all meet together over there (or elsewhere) at a different time. Preferably one that's warmer. ^^;

smartness

I like this plan, too.

Looks like I probably can't get the Monday, so we may have to settle for Friday.

Um, hopefully you mean Sat. ^^; Friday, I'll be flying and won't arrive until 4PM (I figure it'll take ~1-1.5 hrs to get my stuff and transfer from the airport to my hotel). Otherwise, no major worries (beyond me being semi-linguistically out of my mind). Considering how I'm figuring I'll be doing JLPT1 again next year... there's always next year, too. ^^;;

optimism

Actually, I did mean Friday, but that's because I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around the dates of that weekend. This works out, too--I'll still have that last vacation day in reserve. ^_^

I shall remain optimistic about your chances this year. It's not that I don't want you to visit twice (don't even think we're not at least going to meet for tea!!!); it's just that I have this pesky optimistic streak.

I saw the first half of the first episode of Hakushaku to Yousei. Then I had to go away. I'm going to give it another chance. It was bumping up against my anti-kinks.

I haven't been to Japantown. I'll ask my flist to see if any of them know. (I suspect I have a few more Torontonians than you do.) Just a bit of a warning: It's pretty far out from the centre of the city.

I'll try to arrange for December 8 off. I'll have to throw myself on mid-boss's mercy. Cross your fingers for me. If I can't get that, what time is your flight on the 9th? I know your focus will be the JLPT until you've written it. (Sunday, right?)

WRT Hakushaku, I think the main thing I ran into with ep 1 was how cliche it was, but I'm wondering if it wasn't deliberately done that way. Ep 2 did have me cringing, and I'm finally getting used to the sheer silly with what's said in ep 3. ^^;

Cheers on Japantown. The directions on getting there seem pretty straightforward, but since I don't have any sense of where things are in T.O. in the first place... ^^;;

If you can't get the 8th and are free, it's possible to meet on the 6th. (I really should leave my hotel room, after all.) The only problem is that my mind will be half in La-La land and I'll want to study during the evening for the exam on Sun. (Of course, if I sit down and study properly *now* and am ready for the test, I might be able to have more of my mind and be less in 'doooommm' mode then, but... I don't think I'm sufficiently prepared for the material this year.) ^^;; As it is, I'll be leaving on a noon flight on Tues. (I usually take later return flights, so I'm not sure where the brain was when booking this. Maybe cringing at the idea of Dec cold. ^^; )

^^;; And the longer you wait on reading, the further and further you fall behind too. I haven't read the last novel and I'm 2-3 behind for Shounen Onmyouji. Granted I can read a lot faster than the author writes, but... ^^;; 3-4 books behind already. Not good.

Good luck with your NaNo! ^_^ Hopefully we'll all manage to plough our way through it. (Will have to remember to do a shout out or two during the month so we can all do some bragging/mocking. ^^;

Great minds do think alike! The series I'm mainly focused on is HakuSei, and I just follow the rest for swoons and sighs, namely VKG, Kuroshitsuji, Skip Beat and Nodame. ^^

*laughs* Lots of bishounen/biseinen with those titles! ^o^

I thought Hakushaku was funny. He reminds me a lot of Tamaki, that Earl.

I dropped Shikibane and haven't started Skip Beat, yet.

Please tell me you're picking up Kuroshitsuji?

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)

*laughs* Very much reminiscent of Tamaki. ^^;;

Good luck with Skip Beat. You're familiar with the manga though, aren't you? If so, you'll know what you'll be in for for the first while. ^^;

Please tell me you're picking up Kuroshitsuji?

? I think that depends on what you mean by 'picking up'. ^^;

I shall be on your case after JLPT for IW. Even if you never finish the spin offs, I want to read the end of IW! Until then, good luck with NaNo and JLPT. I admire you so much for both, since that kind of self dicipline appears to be beyond me.

^^;; I suspect you might kill me if I didn't at least do one of the spin-offs. *laughs* But yes, by all means, do get on my case once JLPT is over (and I'm back at home, that is). ^^;; Self-discipline... I have self-discipline?? *blink* More like stubborn refusal to giving in. ^^;;

You have enough self discipline to get things written down at least in part. My stories just stay in my head.

Umm. Actually, more stories stay put than actually make it out. Although there's like a handful of partially written and plotted out things on my USB drive, too. I wonder if I'll get the spring time story that I started writing in spring, worked on more *next* spring. ^^; I don't know if I'd be so optimistic as to think that I'd get it *done* next spring. *laughs*
