Taking a bit longer than expected :/

current mood: tired

It's funny how you sometimes forget about how fiddly some things are. Since I'd just re-set up the desktop system over the weekend, I was lulled into a false sense of simplicity because that system is so basic. Not so for Mokkun. :/ So far, I'm still working on program installation, updates and other basic setup aspects and hope to start in on data transfer tomorrow. I'd been hoping to finish everything by tonight, but... *shrug* Oh well, Mokkun did have minor brain surgery today... not to mention I watched a few videos while Vista was being updated. (And being on dial-up is definitely slowing me down at touch.) :P

That said, I can definitely understand why some people dislike Vista so much while others don't really seem to notice. There are several things I have no idea how to do yet, and it could drive me mildly insane over time. (For example, how to change basic things like global directory viewing preferences or start menu editing.) Basically, there's a definite learning curve to it. However, I will admit it's a pretty-looking OS and I do like the sidebar that they brought in, but I don't like how the sidebar takes up the entire column of space and can't be a partial space. (Or at least, I haven't figured out how to trim it if it can be.) I was also a bit sad when I discovered Vista Business has *no* games installed whatsoever. Okay, I guess technically you're not supposed to be playing games on a business machine, but I liked the games like Spider Solitaire or what have you. They were nice, brainless distractions for a few minutes when you needed it. Add to that that not everyone who buys a system with business is going to use it for work... *sigh*

One thing's for sure, once Mokkun's up and running, I'll be looking for a Canadian reseller for the Compal and ordering it again with XP. As much as I can work with Vista right now, it isn't striking me as being ready for me to use fulltime yet; there are still a number of bugs and it's an incredible resource hog.

Which reminds me, this might be a Vista issue, but for those people who are on Vista and use Firefox, is it me, or is MS hamstringing Firefox? I'm not getting the search suggestions when typing in searches on Mokkun for some reason. I don't usually use that feature, but it's a bit conspicuous in its absence. Otherwise, so far, I've had a couple of incompatibilities and had to re-install Firefox after something ate it, but no BSODs yet.

Here's to hoping the rest of the setup goes smoothly and painlessly. >.<;

My dad couldn't even use Firefox with Vista. ~_~

Does the view wobble and shake uncontrollably when you try to user FireFox, or was that just Dell's little problem?

Not sure what happened in your father's case. It could've been Dell (sic hardware), drivers, or...? I take it this was the system before the Alienware? ^_^

In my case, one of the programs I'd added from either the scanner or tablet setup ended up eating Firefox and it refused to load anymore. It gave a weird error message, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the thing. It seems to be working now at least. ^_^

LinxMai!

Apparently he just hated Vista. Seriously hated it. Enough to get rid of the laptop and get the shiny alienware one.

Good to know you're having better luck. I think I won't tell him. XD

*laughs* Well, given the choice today, I'd still take XP over Vista. Vista's just not ready to be used as a fulltime OS for anyone who does more than basic things, and things like the issue with Photoshop Elements is just not good. >.>

Being able to manage with Vista isn't the same thing as liking it. :/

as a mac user I know nothing about vista, but going to an upgraded os is always a bit of a pain, as I discovered in April (going from 10.2.8 to 10.4) but now I love it!

However, I was not a happy camper throughout much of May.
