GH Manga translation snippet

April 4th, 2007 (07:54 pm)

And as requested by akinarei, here's the translation for a few pages from vol 7 of the manga for GH. (Most of pg 16~21 end Japanese tankoubon).

Ayako: --They're back

Mai: Wh-what's wrong?

Ayako: Thank goodness you're all right.
Another person's disappeared.

Mai or Bou-san: Again?!

Bou-san or Mai: Who has?

Ayako: Apparently Fukuda-san.

Bou-san: That'd be the young woman with Minami Psychic Investigators, huh?

Bou-san: How old is she?

Ayako: Huh?!
I don't know. Twenty-five, somewhere around there maybe?

Naru: Why do you ask that?

I see...

Ayako: ......You're kidding, right?

Naru: Yasuhara-san,
neither of you are to ever be on your own.

Naru: Matsuzaki-san,
to what extent can we trust in your ability?

Ayako: ......What's that supposed to mean?

Naru: This isn't the time for word games.
Mai and Yasuhara-san are both needed. However, this place is dangerous.

To what extent can we rely on you?

Ayako: ......Warding spell level.
You can trust me on that much.

Naru: Understood.
In that case, Matsuzaki-san and Hara-san, the two of you are never to be apart from one another.

You can follow-up on one another, right?

Masako: ...I don't feel safe with Matsuzaki-san.

Ayako: Hey!

Naru: Hara-san.

Basically I can't trust anyone outside this group.
We don't have many people to rely on.

If you're also even a minor psychic, you can protect yourself, right?

Masako: ...Yes.

Naru: Yasuhara-san can't protect himself whatsoever.
He needs to be protected by people we can rely on a great deal.

Masako: ...Okay...

Naru: So, Bou-san and John,
The two of you guard Yasuhara-san.

Lin: Wait a moment.
Does that mean I'm to guard Taniyama-san?

Naru: That's right.

Lin: In that case, who's to guard you? I believe you can't use warding spells. Am I wrong?

Mai: Th-that's right. What're you gonna do?!

That's right. I'd forgotten,

but Naru's not a psychic,

he's just a paranormal researcher.

Naru: Things'll work out.

Lin: I don't think so! I'm not going to risk having something happen to you.
I will guard Naru.

Takigawa-san gets Yasuhara-san.
Brown-san, please take care of Taniyama-san.

Naru: It'd be hard for Bou-san on his own.

Bou-san: Oy, oy, Naru-chan.

Naru: I'm not underestimating you.
It means this place has the potential of being that dangerous.

Lin: In that case, send someone home.
I can't leave you on your own.

If anything were to happen to you, how am I to apologise to the professor?

Mai: ...Professor?

By "professor"...

uguu~~ I hate del-ray...I knew that anime got that part right...

Most of the anime was quite faithful to the manga except for where they obviously changed things (end of Yuasa HS case with Ubusuna Kei; Silent Christmas), so in that sense, if they dialogue's vastly different while the images are the same...

Yeah. Actually thats how Im realizing more of what Del-Ray screwed up...if it different from what the anime said, I assume now that the anime was right....

~del-ray needs a new translator...this is ridiculous.....~

Thank you!

Thank you, thank you! Grr... stupid Del Ray. They really screwed up some major details. @_@ Why did they have to license Ghost Hunt?

Oh well, enough of my complaining.

Thanks again!

Re: Thank you!

Cheers. Dare I ask what they did? I have no idea when the bookstore will actually stock copies (or when I'll drop by there), so I can't actually flip through and see what it says. >.>

Re: Thank you!

Uh, let's see-- I'll type what I have with the guarding scene--who'll guard who, page 19 where it made no sense.

When you translated the conversation between Naru and Ayako-- that pretty much was the same thing Del Rey had. The part with Masako was pretty much the same, too. So I'll start with her medium comment.

Masako: "Since I'm a medium, I can protect myself."

Naru: "...Good point..." ::I'm assuming this next part is also Naru:: "So, Monk-san and John... You two guard Yasuhara-san. Please be diligent."

Lin: *rising from his seat* "And is it all right if I guard Taniyama-san?"

Naru: (?): "Okay...but..."

Lin: Then who'll guard you..."
And so on.

@_@ You see why I asked. I knew that from what Mai said last manga he didn't hate and could at some point see her as maybe a friend-- if that-- but I didn't think he'd just automatically start protecting Mai all of the sudden. I'm really disappointed with this volume.

Re: Thank you!

*blink* Okay... thanks for the info. ......Yeah, I don't think I'll be in any hurry to pick up the English manga. >.>

Re: Thank you!

^_^ I wouldn't be, either. Hopefully volume 8 will do better, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Thank you!

Oh yeah, did I go far enough in the translation? That place seemed like a reasonable place to cut things off in terms of who was assigned to whom, which is why I stopped there. ^^;

Re: Thank you!

Yes, thanks a lot, you've no idea how confused I was. I wasn't even sure who in the world was speaking on that page. Normally, I don't have such a hard time telling-- but even now when I look at it I'm still not sure.

Pretty sad.

...by the way, I've been wondering: who's your icon?

Re: Thank you!

What's it say when I know longer remember the character's name? It's from... Night of the Beasts(? Kemonotachi no Yoru) by Shiomi Chika. I like a number of her works but especially Kanon (sp?). ^_^

Re: Thank you!

Sounds like a series I'd like. I'll have to check it out!

Re: Thank you!

I second Shadow's recommendation for Night of the Bests. It's a good darker shoujo series with some surprising plot twists. I'm looking forward to Canon when it releases later this month based solely on the fact that Night of the Beasts is that good.

Re: Thank you!

Del Rey's screw ups in that scene went farther. They screwed up parts of the rest of the argument between Naru and Lin as well. One of the screw ups was downright funny. And so obvious that anyone should have noticed.

I quote:

Lin: Please at least consider your parents feelings.
Naru: Lin
Lin: Did you ... forget you said you were one of 17 children?

What makes me laugh about that mistrans is the implication that Naru being one of 17 children would somehow make it harder for his parents to lose him than if he was, say, one of two children.

Re: Thank you!

One of 17 children?! ROFLMAO! That's hilarious! That'd be some family! ^^;;

Funnily enough, I decided to plug the line into some online translators and see what they came up with, and they're pretty weird. If that's what you're going from, maybe you'd screw that up...? I don't know. I was thinking that if they'd written something like "have you forgotten that you're a child of 17" someone might take that as one of 17 children rather than a child of only 17 years of age, but...

Oh man, that's a huge family. No wonder Naru's so antisocial! ^^;;

Re: Thank you!

I have this image now after reading that of Martin & Luella traveling around the world collecting stray psychic orphans as if the couple was some weird version of the neighbor cat lady.

I've been giggling over that mistranslation all week long. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I think of Naru and his 16 brothers and sisters. :D

Poor Luella!

Re: Thank you!

Yeah, I wondered about that! I thought that was from when he was at the orphanage or how many kids his dad used as experiments. @_@

I hope you don't mind if I friended your lj. vampyrichamster pointed the way here and I must admit that I love the Ghost Hunt snippets you post. (I really wish I could read the novels!)

I especially love the snippets that involve Yasuhara... he's such a character. :)

Yes I do hope you don't mind me friending you too.

I've really got a love for this series and really like the work you are doing on Saiunkoku Monogatari too.

I've watched a few other subs of both shows, but I really do find that I prefer your work.

So thank you very much for taking these shows on ^-^

Ah, question!

Bou-san's name, just out of curiousity, what does the Kanji of Houshou translate too?

The romanji name looks like it would be 'monk' or something, but I'm not sure.

Posted by: Shadow (kagedreams)
Posted at: April 8th, 2007 05:03 pm (UTC)

Hmm... It's literally made up of two characters: law/method/way and life/live/raw. I guess it would translate to... "way of life" or "life's true meaning". Something like that. ^^;

Posted by: Kakurenbo (akinarei)
Posted at: April 11th, 2007 08:16 pm (UTC)

Ah. I guess it doesn't mean Monk after all. It certainly looked like it in the English. *rolls eyes* Talk about a play on words.

Guess it's not as bad as Watanuki from CLAMP's xxxHolic.
