WTF?! and Wai!

Okay, so when doing some more digging (specifically fleeing to Kadokawa's book release page), I discovered Amazon has the release date wrong for the book I'm hunting. It's not *published* yet. *whew!* But that doesn't change the fact that I can't order it yet. >.<

Dropping by the mall today, I managed to nab GH 5 and 6 but having done a minor flip through some pages, I'm seriously tempted to just burn them or otherwise throw them away. Del Rey, what have you done to this story?! I'm sorry, but your translator is *wrong*! Some of the lines are right of course (if it was 100% wrong, that would be worse than pathetic), but a chunks of the text and the entire *feel* of certain scenes are the *opposite* of what they should be! I have to admit to having been utterly shocked and dumbfounded when I read some of the *crap* that's in these two books. Don't get me wrong. What I've read of book...3? 4? was fine and I checked book 4 and it has a different translator. Someone who *knows* Japanese at least. But what I've noticed in books 5 and 6 on flip through... I have to seriously wonder, if a person actually *read* this book, would it make *sense*?! Do the words match the images, do the lines from page to page correspond and make a coherent story?! It sounds like it's jumping back and forth constantly contradicting itself or something. :/ I guess the good thing for English viewers of the anime is that hopefully the upcoming stories will be a bit of a pleasant surprise compared to what they've read in the past two volumes. :/

Don't get me wrong, just because I write and translate things one way doesn't mean that's the only way to do it. Of course I can make mistakes and I do, and I may well make (have made) a major one without realising it. However, this book... Let's look at the beginning just after the fire and we have Mai's narrative:

English:
Ryokuryou high reported "a locker room fire on the 12th day" after the ghost incidents started.
But in my vision, I remember thinking, "this looks like a TV studio, not the locker room."
So Naru decided to set up our detection equipment in the studio instead.
And then...

Japanese:

One of Ryokuryou High School's strange incidents: "a fire that occurs in the change room every 12 days"
But I had a strange dream, and mentioned that, "it might not be the change room, but rather in the PA room."
So Naru said something about setting up equipment in the PA room.
And then......

Note:
- change room or locker room doesn't matter
- PA room or studio either can work there; whatever you'll find in a high school.

What's sad is, this isn't all that bad. It's just pretty much the first one. And it keeps going, and gets worse, and they *killed* the scene at the end of this story. *cry*

And the Wai! would be, while hunting for a new CD player, I got tired of looking at local shops and jumped to Joshin's site (Japanese electronics shop) to see what was available out there. While there, I accidentally clicked on CD/DVD as in "movies and music" stuffs and discovered Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbou will be coming out on DVD in April! Wai! We have what was commercially released on LD and VHS eons ago, but this is an 11 DVD box set! *___* I'm *so* looking forward to seeing all of it! ^o^ (Why, yes, I did already pre-order it. Why do you ask?)

Anyhow, I'm going to lick my wounds from the horror that has become of Ghost Hunt manga, and do some edits. >.

Seeing as you got me into Ghost Hunt importing to Germany in the first place ^^, I would like to respectfully request (if the translation of the manga keeps getting worse) whether at some point in your truly busy schedule you might not write a text with a translation of those particular pages in Del Rey, so I (who have no grasp of Japanese at all) at some point can read the manga and understand what exactly is happening.

I've got number 5 and 6 on my to be read pile, see.

However I'll quite understand if you can only get around to it in a year or two, heh.

I'll see what I can do, but it'll be a bit slow. Right now, I'm beyond swamped with fansubbing. ^^; Of course, if they'll publish a proper version, that would be all the better considering. *sigh*

*cry* I'd heard some complaints about that manga, but am so thirsty for Ghost Hunt that I was considering buying it. *grumble*

I didn't always care for how things were translated but don't remember huge glaring errors in 1-4. But if you buy anything thereafter, go Japanese or see if Australia or someone else does their own version and try that instead. Or everyone should start complaining to Del Rey about the... it's beyond poor... disgraceful translation. (Or maybe wait and see if the French do it? I haven't checked to see if there's a French version yet). *curious* ...Damn, nothing available. I don't know if it might come up, but I guess currently there's nothing. :/

Of course, to properly complain about it, I think people would need some actual evidence of what's happening. >.

Before I knew people like you, I never knew that manga companies were putting out crap. I'm not saying I don't want to know, but blissful ignorance is a happy memory.

The French don't always do it better - I'm told the first 11 vols of Furuba were bad. *cries*

That's it, just gotta learn Japanese. pfft! Yeah, right after this nap.

^^;; Should I worry about you pounding any 15.15 cm nails into straw dolls out there? :P I agree, sometimes ignorance really is bliss. >.<;

Wasn't Delcourt/Akata planning on re-releasing the first vols to correct the earlier adaptations?

*laughs* From the things you write sometimes, you've picked up quite a bit here and there. ^_^

*dances* Little bits - still miles & miles from reading novels. *sigh*

According to what I read on subafuruba, the publishers were planning to do that, but they'd only be released once the first printing sold out. I'm hoping that when I go in the summer, I'll be able to find the earlier vols in the better adaptation. (The question is whether my rusty French is up to recognising "better".)

No worries about nails & waraningyou - I think that's a terrible thing to do to a tree! Poor Kifune. *pets*

ROFLMAO! Wait a minute! The sympathy goes to the tree? I see... ^^;;

As it is, I do agree that's a *huge* nail to go pounding into a tree regardless of how large some of those sacred trees get. ^^;

Tiny Toons - Gogo Dodo

*shrugs* I figure karma'll sort the rest out. (I know, I know - I'm mixing religions/worldviews.)

BTW, I saw Ysa's frightening output this evening. I'll be doing much the same tomorrow. *pours tea*

The scene at the end that Del Rey killed, is that the one between Naru and Mai outside the school after the reversal? If it is, would you elaborate on Del Rey's wrong bits? That scene, especially Naru's look back at Mai, has been driving me crazy because I'm having the hardest time figuring out the meaning behind Naru's look when he's surrounded by all the shoujo flowers.

Also, while I'm posting, I wanted to ask you a favor. I plan to write an explanation of the Naru mysteries for the people I know who have only watched the anime. To explain the major things that the anime doesn't explain, that sort of thing. I know most of the spoiler details, but I wonder if you'd be willing to look over what I write up to make sure I don't get something wrong and maybe clear up the one or two remaining questions I have. I realize this is an imposition, but would you think about it, please?

That's the one. When I was flipping through, I noticed the line about throwing something back in Mai's face which completely threw me. The scene is a really cute one (a bit cuter in the novel because Naru actually shows his confusion and tries to interject at one point). ^o^ I'll write it up (manga version) a bit later today/night. :/

Sorry, spamming, forgot to mention that response time will seriously depend on when you send and how busy I am at the time, but I'm willing to look through it. I can't promise I'll know all the answers though. ^^;
